I've tried using that option ("mkbootdisk 2.2.9-19mdk") and it seemed to
go okay. However, when I try to boot up under rescue, it gives me the
following error just after it has prompted me for the RAM disk:
"Kernel panic: no INIT found. Try passing INIT= to kernel."

How would I go about fixing this? I've tried copying my /etc/inittab
file to the floppy. I've also tried setting the default runlevel to 1 as
as well as copying the /etc/rc.d/, /etc/rc.d/rc0.d/, /etc/rc.d/rc1.d/
and /etc/rc.d/init.d/ directories over. However, none of these seem to
make any difference.

I can vaguely recall getting the same error once when I tried to boot
from my hard drive and I ended up hitting a brick wall and having to
reformat the partition and reinstall the whole OS.

If someone is able to answere me that question, it would be very great.

Problem is:
I tried to make a multi boot compuputer with NT5 and Linux.
As far as I know. NT-Bootmanager is not able to boot LILO. Except you
copy the lilo into a file,
and add that file as new Boot-entry in the NT-Boot manager.
But I want to evade that file entry.
I've got a home computer on which lilo is installed in the MBR.(as
usually)
and the lilo boots-up the NT-Bootmanager which is on /dev/hda1.
That works wonderful. It's just so, that NT-installer installed the
NT_Loader automatically. Into
/dev/hda1 without any handwork. I nead something similarly on by second
PC. How could I repreduce
such a configuration like that.
LILO->NT
or NT->LILO(/dev/hdb1)
I think the best way is to set up the NT-Loader into /dev/hda1 but how
can I manage that?
Or an other solution without that lilo-dump-file

Sincerely. thanks in advance.

Hi,

I've installed Linux for the first time and while experimening I think i
disturbed some settings and now it stops for a quite long time when it has
to start sendmail services at the time of booting. Is there any way of
removing this service from the boot?

hi guys,

I'm trying to make a gtk interface to a stepper motor and I was
wondering if anyone new of some good sites with example code (or hints)
for sending bytes of information to the serial port with a button press
? (eg click "left", send "L" etc.)

I have a 16C74 stuck to the RS232 port waiting to do all the work and
I've got the v1.2 tutorial from gtk.org but I just can't see how to do
it !

Add the line:

        append "mem=128M" in your /etc/lilo.conf, re-run lilo, and
reboot.

        I believe this is a problem with your BIOS or something. This
should also be in one of the FAQs somewhere. Yep found it:

(from /usr/doc/FAQ/txt/Linux-FAQ on my RedHat 5.2 box (2.0.36 kernel):

1.8 How much memory can Linux use?

   A number of people have asked how to address more than 64 MB of
   memory, which is the default upper limit. Place the following in yo
   lilo.conf file:
append="mem=XXM"

   Where "XX" is the amount of memory, specified as megabytes, for
   example, '128M'. For further details see the lilo manual page.

-- I know, this is out-of-date -- newer kernels don't *normally* have
this problem, but I understand that *some* (older) BIOS's have special
problems, so this still applies.)

The NT install updates the MBR *if and only if* you tell it to format
it's C: drive as NTFS -- it needs to because most BIOS's don't know
about NTFS. Telling NT to format C: as FAT16 does not do this -- NT
installs its boot loader as a plain MS-DOS type executable -- the system
actually starts to boot into MS-DOS (just enough to run the boot loader
/ menu hack). If NT is installed with C: formatted as FAT16, it behaves
as if it is being installed on top of MS-DOS (and if you really install
NT on top of MS-DOS (and/or Win3.11 or even Win9x), it will include a
boot option to boot to the lower-end OS(es)). In this latter case it
assumes that the MBR is 'clean'. At least this has been my (very
limited) experience.

Win98 tends to 'clean out' the MBR if it does not understand it (i.e.
the MBR contains 'lilo'). Some BIOSs with boot sector virus detection
will complain that lilo is a boot sector virus -- I don't know if this
'feature' is used by *any* of the Win* installers in any fashion.

So far I have looked at Suse and Redhat, but any recommendations welcome.

yes....you can be hacked.
I should turn off the Telnet-server from all host exept the one from wich
you telnet into your server.
If you do that and use random passwords for your FTP-server, your pretty
safe.

Subject: tape backup with dd

I've failed in writing a backup back to disk from tape with dd.
I'm running Red Hat 6.0 on Intel and I have a HP Colorado 14GBe
tape drive attached to the paralell port. What I've done is the
following:

First I wanted to backup my primary slave drive. From linux I did

# dd if=/dev/hdb of=/dev/npt0
2504880+0 records in
2504880+0 records out

This took some time and as I got the prompt back I assumed the backup
operation to tape was succesful and I did not verify it in some other
way. I then wanted to write it back so I did

# dd if=/dev/pt0 of=/dev/hdb
0+0 records in
0+0 records out

and as you can see, it failed. Can someone help me here?

Thanks in advance!

Hi,
   I had been building in the past and had this problem before
but forget how I go rid of it. I set some links but can remember
where.
The error I get from /usr/src/linux with make xconfig is
"rm -f include/asm
rm: include/asm: is a directory
make: *** [symlinks] error 1"

I looked at ELF-HOWTO and there is a mention of: loosing links
when you move /usr/include. I did not do that but I did re-apply
the kernel source. What are the links I need?
Thanks David Kirkpatrick

Just to follow up my own post, I dug around a bit and installed kernel
sources.
There was a message in there that kerneld is no more. I guess it is built
into the kernel.
Maybe RedHat will change the kernelcfg program so it knows too.

Now if I can just get the modules to load. When I put this into
modules.conf, the parport and
ide-scsi won't load automatically.  I guess I could put it in rc.local.

Any thoughts on this?

Thanks,

Tim Holmes

/etc/modules.conf:

alias parport_lowlevel parport_pc
alias sound-slot-0 es1370
alias sound-slot-1 esssolo1
alias eth0 ne
options eth0 io=0x300 irq=3
pre-install sg     modprobe ide-scsi # load ide-scsi before sg

The gtk tutorial's good enough for that, with details on how to make all the
various widgets and callbacks work...

Can't help you with the actual sending of a byte, but creating the button
and linking the callback is dead easy...

Just use something like...

GtkWidget *make_icon(GtkWidget *parent, GdkPixmap *icon, GdkBitmap
*mask,GtkWidget *button_bar, GtkTooltips *tooltip, char *tip)
{
  GtkWidget *iconwid;
  GtkWidget *button;

  button=gtk_button_new();
  iconwid=gtk_pixmap_new(icon,mask);
  gtk_widget_show(iconwid);
  gtk_tooltips_set_tip(tooltip,button,tip,NULL);
  gtk_container_add(GTK_CONTAINER(button),iconwid);
  gtk_box_pack_start(GTK_BOX(button_bar),button,FALSE,FALSE,0);
  gtk_widget_show(button);
  return(button);
}

to create a button in a button bar...

and

button=make_icon(window, FIXED0,FIXED0_Mask,button_bar,tooltip,"whatever");
gtk_signal_connect(GTK_OBJECT (button), "clicked",
                   GTK_SIGNAL_FUNC(send_byte),
                   (gpointer)byte_to_send);

(Where byte_to_send is the variable you want to send...)

Then, in the callback routine...

static gint icon_pressed (GtkWidget *widget, GdkEventButton *event, gpointer
data)

where data is the byte_to_send sent by the callback routine.

Hope that helps...
