Subject: Help!! Strange RedHat 6.2 + StarOffice 5.2 problem!!
Date: Wed, 11 Oct 2000 18:40:29 -0400
Hi all, I have a vanilla Sony Vaio 505F laptop that I just
installed RH6.2 on. All of the basic functions behave fine
except for...
I noticed a very peculiar problem with Star Office 5.2. It works fine
too except that the fonts are not the scalable fonts!
i.e. a Times Roman 24pt looks like the 8pt bitmapped font just
pixel-replicated 3x! Its readable, but absolutely horrendous for
presentations! (and I was all hot to trot for the Presentation software
in Star Office!)
Funny thing is, on my desktop at home, the fonts looks great, even when
I start X under 800x600 (which is the resolution of the laptop)
This is such an oddball problem that I have absolutely no idea how to
track down. I even copied over the fonts directories from my desktop,
reset the font path in XFree86Config file, restarted X, and no luck!!
Is this a subtle bug in the NeoMagic chipset support in XFree86?
Somebody please help!
Thank you!!

I got the same problem with my computer. I can play music under windows,
but there is not sound under linux, I used Red Hat 6.1 linux system and
use the CD player within the multimedia.
The CD rom was installed correctly, I can here music if I plug the speaker
directly to the cd player but not to the sound card. But the sound card
works in windows.
Do you solve your problem? and get any idea?

System.map is a "map" of your kernel. It says the entry points of
the functions you compiled into your kernel.

<snip>
It is a limitation of bitmapped fonts that they don't scale very
well. I suggest using TrueType Fonts instead. Red Hat Linux 6.2
handles TrueType fonts if you install some on your system. For
example, you can copy them from the Windows font directory if you have
that available. I just verified this on my computer and that seems to
solve it.

|Excerpt from "man rm":

That will teach me to make sure I check everything on the Linux box.
I actually checked the 'rm' man page on an older Solaris box.
Damn, things keep changing while I'm not looking...
'rm -R *.obj' still won't decend into subdirectories and remove
all the .obj files.

While we're on the subject, what is the proper file to copy System.map to?
(when using lilo)
In the man files for lilo, it says that lilo defaults to /boot/map if the
map isnt specified in lilo.conf, however i can never get lilo to properly
install if i put a map entry in lilo.conf. So just to cover all bases at
the moment I have a System.map and a map file in boot. Any comments?

Why does my netscape 4.75 send an HTTP_USER_AGENT of

home.netscape.com/download/index.html is somehow able to give the

I operate a webserver. It has 3 IDE druves, 1 of which is old. I notice that
even though the CPU usage is rather low (10%), the load average is much
higher.
I suspect that it is due to disk IO.
I would like to run a monitor type command, like top, to find
out which process uses disk IO.

Normally pcmcia services automatically load the proper modules when you
boot with the card or when you insert the card. If your card is
recognized you should hear 2 high beeps. Then all you have to do is
configure eth0 (IP or dhcp, etc.). If you do not get 2 of the same beeps,
check /var/log/messages for errors.
If you are attempting to load these manually, they depend on other modules
that may need to be loaded in a certain order. Although your *_cb module
may be different than my tulip_cb, this is an example of the related
modules (partial output of lsmod):
tulip_cb 32260 2
cb_enabler 2280 2 [tulip_cb]
ds 6216 2 [cb_enabler]

Don't mistake the map file. This is not System.map, and it should not be the
same. The map file is Lilo map of the drive, and has nothing to do with the
map of the kernel.
