Hello
Although I have installed Linux several times on a WIN9x machine, I
never tried NT. (I will use SuSe 6.3)
Could somebody please answer me:
1. Does Partition Magic work smoothly? Which version is needed? Does
NT have a 'real' MS-DOS mode, like WIN9x or only a DOS box?
(I presume you need to be Superuser to do it anyhow).
2. For booting. Can lilo be put in the MBR or in the root
partition. Is there also the 1024 cylinder problem for the kernel?
3. Anything else to look at?
Thanks

For overall and pretty much distro independent config, get
"Running Linux". It is published by O'Reilly. Usually O'Reilly books
are the best. For TCP/IP, get "TCP/IP Illustrated" by Richard W. Stevens.
Don't forget to check out http://www.linuxdoc.org which has almost
all the documentation you will ever need.

One of the reasons I prefer not using "tools" to do simple things. If
you create an entry for an ISP in the /etc/ppp/peers directory, you can
then run "pppd call xxx" where xxx is the filename in the directory.
Since it's all in a system directory you can run pppd from any user (at
least using the permissions I got by default), so that's convenient.
You might need the 'remotename' directive to be suer the right
password is used in /etc/ppp/chap-secrets, other than that it's a
drop-in. I use a bunch of ISPs, connections to clients, etc, and it
works fine for me.

Subject: Linux Kernel 2.2.16 compilation
Date: Thu, 06 Jul 2000 14:55:16 -0500
Hi
I am currently running kernel version 2.2.14. And, I just downloaded
the linux 2.2.16 kernel and compiled it in the standard way. I copied
the bzImage file to the /boot directory and I also made sure to setup
the new image for loading by loadlin. The kernel does boot up
successfully - however, it complains about unresolved symbols during
startup. Swap doesn't get activated and things in general don't work
the same as they used to with the old kernel.
I created a .config file using the old kernel (2.2.14) and used it to do
a 'menu oldconfig' so the I would only have to provide answers to
options in the new kernel; but things don't work like they used to. My
machine is an 800Mhz PIII running RH6.2. The steps I followed are
listed below:
COMPILATION:
make oldconfig
make clean
make dep
make bzImage
make modules
make modules_install
Everything compiles fine (after a little bit of tweaking - new links...
directories.. etc.)
I copied bzImage to /boot and to the appropriate windows directory to be
used by "loadlin". I don't think "loadlin" is the problem, because the
kernel does load. What I don't understand is why things don't work the
same as they did with the old kernel - since I'm using the old kernel's
.config file. I'm thinking that I'm missing some steps in the module
setup process. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
-Karthi.

Usually while in X (under Linux), I can change to a different console by
pressing CTRL-ALT-F1. Then I am given a login prompt.
On my Debian Potato system with kernel 2.2.13, running XFree86 3.3.6 and
wdm (display/login manager) 1.19, when I switch consoles, I see on the
screen my previous X screen shown four times (each 25% smaller and
unreadable). I have to press CTRL-ALT-F7 to get back.
(This problem occurs with these window managers: blackbox, fvwm95, and
qvwm. I do not want to use a window manager feature to create a new
console, because I want to be able to login on the other console as a
different user. This system is my mom's and when I visit her home I want
to use her system as myself without closing her current X
session/clients.)
Does anyone have any ideas where the problem is? Or where I can find
further info on solving this?

Version 4 will refuse to work on hdd's bigger than 8 gigs. If you have
<=8gig hdd, you can use 4.0

You could try the following setup:
hda1 /boot ( with lilo installed here )
hda2 ( nt ( 4 or 5 , it doesn't matter.)
And keep lilo out of the mbr .
>
>
> 3. Anything else to look at?
If you do a complete install of win2k that is, prepare an empty partition
and then run the setup from dos , it will trash the ext 2 file system.
but if you put in a minimal nt4 and then upgrade it, it seems to be fine.
The one thing you have to watch out for is to make the partition that nt
boots from, the active until nt's everything is setup. Let nt think it is by
itself , which seems to suit it perfectly.
Then set the /boot as active, boot into linux, and add an entry for nt. I
found it a lot simpler to alter lilo than to go messing around with the
bootsector.dos file for nt's bootloader . So nt's bootloader loads itself,
and nothing else, lilo handles the multibooting of the computer.

The more cache the better, however the question should be is the difference
worth the money. BTW the architecture of the Athlon allows it to use up to 8MB
of cache each, and up to 16 processors in one system, boy what the future holds.

Hello,
I noticed that this has just happened to me again! Your answer is
the most plausible of all answers I received since I sometimes
log in as root, download a tarball to /usr/local/src, and extract
it under /tmp with the tar -C/tmp -zxvf blah.tar.gz command.
However this time I notice my /tmp directory looks like:
ls -[nzanella@tulip nzanella]$ ls -ld /tmp
drwxrwxr-x 17 nzanella nzanella 12288 Jul 6 14:39 /tmp
[nzanella@tulip nzanella]$
So now I have to do the following as root:
chown root /tmp
chgrp root /tmp
chmod 1777 /tmp
to restore permissions and ownerships to:
drwxrwxrwt 17 root root 12288 Jul 6 14:46 /tmp
How is it possible that an accident occurred to change not
only the permissions but also the ownership of the directory?
I do not use any particular backup/restore tools other than
tar and gzip. Could it be that some buggy script with the setuid
bit changed the permissions and ownerships?
Thanks,
Neil

You use pppd to dial and connect, and give it a 'chat' script to tell
it how to use your ISP's menu options to get to the ppp point. See the

I can load my 2.2.5 kernels without problems. Only the 2.2.7 kernel does not

I have a somewhat similar configuration, running Win98,Win2k and Red Hat
Linux 6.2.Earlier ,I used Lilo to boot ,but it could not boot
Win2K.Indeed,it did not recognise it.Windows Bootstrap program booted both
but would not load Linux. So,I would boot Linux from a floppy and use
Windows' boot manager. Then I got a trial version of PartitionMagic from a
magazine CD.PartitionMagic won't work,siting Disk geometry errors(BTW,do
you know what error 117 is?).But Bootmagic works very well ,in my
opinion, creating a colourful and really needed GUI interface at
boottime. When the machine boots up,the screen asks me to choose between
Windows and Linux. If I choose Linux,I am placed at the LILO prompt, from
where I can still go to Win98 by typing DOS.If,I choose Windows, the
Windows' boot manager is produced ,from where I can choose between Win98
and Win2K.Note that Bootmagic can not yet boot directly into Win2K.For
more information ,go to Powerquest's website.

Check if the disk where the given kernel is located doesn't have bad blocks.
Try to use
image=/usr/src/linux/.../bzImage
in your lilo.conf. If you still get the same error then the newly
compiled kernel is broken and you might need to recompile her.

To enable one of those modes you have to specify "vga=ask" in the
lilo.conf file and rerun LILO. Then you can type in the descired
mode at the "vga=ask" prompt. For example if you like to use
1024x768x256 colors you have to say "0x305" at this prompt.
This is from 2.4.0.2-test. Keep in mind that 2.4, despite its even
number, is still in heavy development and things may be severely br0ken no
matter what you do. This works very nicely in 2.2.x--I have my machines
booting with vga=0x303 in /etc/lilo.conf....
