Using gmc is fine, but I wonder why it can't be done
with the 'rpm' package manager itself?

had the same problem, cleaning up the mbr seemed the only solution that
worked, resetting lilo didn't change the result. There might be some garbage
left from previous installations (partitions) at least that was my problem.

Hi all,

i have tried to dump about 12GB partition on a
DDS3-Tape by using:
"/sbin/dump 0ufsdb /dev/st0 524288 3200 128 /dev/sda3"
but I got the following message:
....
DUMP: Date of last level 0 dump: the epoch
  DUMP: Dumping /dev/sda3 (/home) to /dev/st0
DUMP: mapping (Pass I) [regular files]
  DUMP: mapping (Pass II) [directories]
DUMP: estimated 12905293 tape blocks on 0.03 tape(s).
  DUMP: End of tape detected
  DUMP: Closing /dev/st0
DUMP: Change Volumes: Mount volume #2
....
any idea??
(Before I run dump, I always run "mt -f /dev/st0 rewind" first.)
Btw, I dumped 14GB partition with same command on the same
band once successful.

TIA!

I bascally don't. I installed my kernel sources in a backup dir
(/usr/src/kernel-backup/linux-2.2.14/) and every time I want to make a
new kernel (have done it +-15 times this way), I

rm -fr /usr/src/linux-2.2.14 && cp -rvxaR
/usr/src/lkernel-backup/linux-2.2.14/ /usr/src/ && cd
/usr/src/linux2.2.14 && make mrproper && make menuconfig

and after that a

make dep && make bzImage && make modules && make modules_install

very fast!!! actually, the first line is done by a script, and the second
by hand, on newlines, so without the &&'s, but it's the same effect)

What is the make (between clean and zimage) you're talking about??? I
never do it.

Note: everyone who uses x should look at make menuconfig. I find it way
better to use than make xconfig...

Do you have this option compiled into your kernel?

Kernel/User netlink socket (CONFIG_NETLINK) [Y/n/?] ?

CONFIG_NETLINK:

This driver allows for two-way communication between certain parts
of the kernel or modules and user processes; the user processes are
able to read from and write to character special files in the /dev
directory having major mode 36. So far, the kernel uses it to
publish some network related information if you say Y to "Routing
messages", below. It is also used by the firewall code to publish
information about possible attacks if you say Y to "IP: firewall
packet netlink device" further down. You also need to say Y here if
you want to use arpd, a daemon that helps keep the internal ARP
cache (a mapping between IP addresses and hardware addresses on the
local network) small. The ethertap device, which lets user space
programs read and write raw Ethernet frames, also needs the network
link driver. If unsure, say Y.

Subject: Shared RAID for mail/web server + load balancer? How do I do that?
Date: Fri, 07 Jul 2000 17:52:39 +0800

Hi!

I need to set up a mail /web server at where I'm working, and after
thinking about it for a while, I thought it better to have a fault
tolerant set up. I sort of managed to determine what bits & pieces I'd
required... but putting it together is entirely another matter!!

I'd appreciate any help, pointers, advice, resources anyone could point
me towards.

The basic stuff are:
2 linux boxes, built-in dual channel SCSI RAID
1 load balancer
1 external RAID
RH Linux 6.2
(Mix well....ugghh)

What i need to do is to have the 2 Linux boxes to be identical, these 2
boxes access 1 set of data on the external raid. ie, there should be
only 1 set of mail app, mailboxes etc.

So these 2 boxes need to have their own OS? Can they share data?

A load balancer will determine which box gets the job etc. for a fault
tolerant setup.

How can I put everything together? Are there any extra special bits that
I require?

Is there a better way of doing this? ie, sharing data on 1 RAID
subsystem is a no-no?

Thanks in advance for your help!!

Ufff this is the situation. I have to install in on a Computer with an
already complete system. If I squash the NT system I get be killed.

But I don't understand NT trashes the EXT2 (Linux system)? How come?

do i somehing wrong ? I need advice badly, because of my work

(Probably its due to a invalide file format... i guess so, but I

One annoying thing about make mrproper is that it "cleans" away any
existing .config file, so if you haven't preserved it you have to start
the configuration all over again. So in fact you need to run

mv {.,}config
make mrproper
mv {,.}config
make xconfig
etc.

Huh ? IMHO Linux is just another flavor of UNIX.
The only difference I see is that it still lags behind the "commercial" versions
in certain areas ( JFS, LVM, smit, HACMP, ... ).

There used to be a restriction on how big the swap partition was
allowed to be. That was 128 MB. I don't know whether that's still
the case. If it is you could split your 512 MB into two and use both
of them as swaps.

In general .eps pictures are the best. Maybe you should reconfigure your

The lyx-users mailinglist is nice for these kind of questions.

Regular PS will not work well with LyX, you need to have your images
