Subject: tar omitting leading directories
Date: Fri, 09 Feb 2001 01:14:47 GMT

Hi there,

Couldn't find a comp.linux.tar or similar newsgroups so here I am.
I had a look on the tar faqs and on the web (using google, very
good search engin BTW and scanned the newspostings in deja.com)
but I couldn't find an easy solution (none). Here is my problem:

I receive from a query the locations of lots of files I need to tar
in one archive in order to send it to the client. The locations
look like this:

/data/thisproject/veryimportant/format/20-01-99/file1.txt
/data/thisproject/veryimportant/format/20-01-99/file2.txt
etc.
/data/thisproject/veryimportant/format/13-02-99/file1.txt
/data/thisproject/veryimportant/format/13-02-99/file2.txt
/data/thisproject/veryimportant/format/13-02-99/file3.txt
etc.
/data/thisproject/othermachine/16-08-01/file1.txt

Several files in date-labeled directories.

I receive the locations in one single long string, let's say
files2tar. What I do is give tar this long string. What I get is
one tar archive which is good but the thing is when the client
unpacks the whole archive he will have to click through all these
leading directories (data,thisproject...) to finally get the files
he wants. I was wondering if there is any nice and neat option
when creating the archive to tell tar that it should put
the files only with the last directory like

20-01-99/file1.txt
20-01-99/file2.txt
13-02-99/file1.txt
13-02-99/file2.txt
13-02-99/file3.txt
16-08-01/file1.txt

I need the whole path to get to the data itself but I want them to
be archived in less directory depths (omitting the leading ones
except of the last).

Anyone any ideas ? Even if I use a script (any language) to shorten
the files2tar string to
"20-01-99/file1.txt 20-01-99/file2.txt 13-02-99/file1.txt etc."

how can I give this information to the tar command ?
Something like tar cf data.tar files2tar --target files2tarshortened ??
But there is no --target or so ...

Thanks for helping :-)

Since when? I think this might be one of those differences
between American English and Aussie English. The set of
all mass nouns overlaps, but is not identical between the
two variants. ("Mass nouns" is what I call those nouns that
are difficult to categorize into plural and singular because
they refer to mass quantities. For example pudding, water,
air, etc. It makes little sense to plural-ize them until you
put them in a container or a measurement, and then you are
actually pluralizing the measurement noun. For example, it
doesn't make any sense to say, "I have 10 waters.", but it
makes sense to say "I have 10 glasses of water.", or "I have
10 litres of water.") "Integer" might be one of those words
that is considered a mass noun in one country, but not in the
other. I have never, not once, heard 'integer' referred to
in the plural without an 's' on it.

: "Cant" has the problem that it's also a word meaning "nonsensical

: Since "can't" is not ambiguous, i prefer it.

I don't see how the difference in pronounciation is relevant.
"can't" is ALSO pronounced differently outside the US (sounding
to my ears like "Cont".) , so use of the apostrophe doesn't
really change anything about this problem.

:
:> The only purpose grammar has that really matters is to remove ambiguity.

: A point worth consideration in the case of the apostrophe.

But it doesn't have any ambiguity. The "cant" as a type of speech
is a noun. As the contraction "can't", it cannot be placed into a
sentence where a noun would go. This removes the ambiguity - if
the word is used as a noun, it's not the contraction..

:> For example, it's important to know the difference between
:> "Kill Steve!" and "Kill, Steve!". But often times the grammar doesn't
:> remove ambiguity at all, and in that case I don't care.

: Another example was used by a poster recently:

: In punctuating "Woman without her man is nothing",
: a man wrote: "Woman, without her man, is nothing.",
: whereas a woman wrote: "Woman! Without her, man is nothing.".

This only would convince someone who already agrees that
they are crooks. If you are trying to show that they are
crooks, then your intended audience won't listen to you
seriously if you do that. It's the same reason that it
makes no sense to say things like "Microshaft" or "Mickeysoft".
It doesn't matter if they humourously point out something

Ok.. I don't know about anyone else, but I got lost in that...

Do a "which emacs" and find out which one it is pointing to. When you make
changes, you might need to do a "rehash" or "hash -r" depending on shell,
to get the right one.

HI- and thankds for the reply! I already did install all of those
components on my RH system, but hunting them down, and installing them
took like 2 weeks. The install itself wasn't too bad, but all of the
failed dependencies turned into a recursive nightmare of installs. First
it doeesnt like the glibc, then I try to update that and that install
doesn't like something else, and before long I'm like 5 levels of
recursion down on the initial install! My tinking was that with a
distro, the dependencies would all match?

Your point is well-taken about getting the latest versions though-
something to think about :)

I have 256MB RAM and 100MB NIC and usually run at about 0.5T1.

Thanks Michael! I'll bop over to SUSE and have a look. I have a matrox
dual head video card and Suse has great device support so that is an
appealing prospect.

Yea. NOT that it works with xlock, though. Upgrading to 4.0.1 broke

Whatever. I get along fine without an IDE, even in Java.

Maybe because it has no IDE. Maybe because there's no PythonCo to send
middle managers on junkets. Howcome "the enterprise" doesn't use Lisp
or Smalltalk? Why is water wet? Are you a leader or a follower?

But there is an application server called Zope that's written in Python,
and a number of commercial products use it as a built-in scripting
language. Visit <http://www.python.org/> with your questions, as the

I suggest that you follow the Nvidia-OpenGL-Configuration HOWTO
(http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/mini/Nvidia-OpenGL-Configuration/index.html).

I did back when I had 0.9-5, and they worked. Later on, I upgraded to
0.9-6 and haven't had any problems. So, I would assume that following the
HOWTO using 0.9-6 to begin with should work as well.

Would this be something like xclipboard maybe (standard with X)?
Then there's xfilesel which I guess copies a selection to a file
and back to an X selection.

If these are similar to what you mean then the URL for xfilesel
is at freshmeat (the place you didn't want to be referred to).

Just for testing, maybe you could try to pop these messages using
Netscape, Eudora, or maybe fetchmail on a Linux machine.

If that works, I'd ask on a Windows group, if the other pop clients
all fail too, I'd post more details here. Perhaps there are some log
file messages, maybe in /var/log/syslog?

Most Linux systems are set up to use procmail as the local delivery
agent by default, so you should not have to set up a .forward.

I have none under Mandrake 7.1, and it works fine.

Howdy,
Prior to setting up internet access, What can I do to
harden a one user linux box? The Security_HOWTO said edit
/etc/inetd.conf, so I commented out all but ftp & telnet and
'killall -HUP inetd'.
 /etc/hosts.allow: ALL: 127.
 /etc/hosts.deny: ALL: ALL
rh6:~> chmod -x /usr/bin/{rsh,rlogin,rexec}
rh6:~> chmod -x /usr/sbin/in.{rshd,rlogind,rexecd}

The Howto also mentions commenting out all un-needed services
from /etc/services unfortunately I have no idea what most of those 300
services are hence no idea what I need to leave in.
What's a minimum I can leave in and still have a working system?

/etc/rc.d/rc3.d/ contains these which I don't know enough to
know if I need or not:
 K55routed K85netfs S10network
 S11portmap S50inet S99linuxconf

All suggestions welcome.
TIA,
MiKe
