Subject: linux frame buffering with matrox g400

Hello I'm encountering a
problem with the frame buffering and I can't solve it.
I'm willing to use frame buffering with my desktop with a matrox G400
32Mb installed in it. Using the vesa 2.0 fb I've reached the maximum
resolution of 800x600 as the graphic board seems not to support natively
the vesa standard 1240x768 but only with its proprietary drivers.
With matroxfb the situation doesn't seem to change. I've followed the
instructions in the various howtos but I didn't manage to reach that
resolution and I thought that the support guaranteed for millenium,
mystique and g100,g200 is not guaranted for g400. Where am I making a
mistake?
Thanks for all
Simone :-)

Corel WP8 has a text-mode available, but you've got to buy the
"server" version. It's not included in the 50USD shrink-wrap
box or in the free download.

Definitely.

Once you get it set up and running, DOSEMU is pretty
impressive, but configuring it can be a bit intricate (there
are loads of modes/features/options) Read the instructions
from top to bottom once or twice _before_ you start messing
with things.

Not to mention the video quality. Pixelization something fierce on a
450MHz system, 192M RAM, VooDoo 3 2000 16M vid card, and 17" monitor.
Squares about 1" across at times. Frames that move in jerks and jumps.
Sound that follows video at 1 or 2 second intervals, sometimes worse.
ASF may generate files 1/2 the size of MPEGs, but I'm not sure the quality
is worth the savings in media costs and storage space.

I don't know of any native non-GUI word processors for Linux and the GUI
ones likely wouldn't work very well on a 386/20 even if they can run on
Linux 1.2.1, so your best bet would probably be an old DOS-based word
processor unless you want to give (La)TeX a try.
Microsoft Word for DOS 5.5 is available directly from Microsoft's
website:
US English version:
http://officeupdate.microsoft.com/downloadDetails/wd55eng.htm
International English version:
http://officeupdate.microsoft.com/downloadDetails/wd55ben.htm
It'll definitely work in DOS and probably even under DOSEMU in Linux
(assuming you can get DOSEMU working on Linux 1.2.1).
P. S.

I ran Latex on a similar machine. I downloaded tetex version 1.something and
it actually compiled out of the box (I also had a rather old

Firstly, to answer your question (and pay attention at the end, there's a
lesson coming up :> );
I use MP3Blaster to convert MP3's to WAV's. I don't think it'll go the
other way, but hey, you've already received two suggestions that answer
THAT question. (Read before respond. Always helps. :> ).
MP3Blaster also makes a great command-line MP3 player, IMHO. You can
find it by searching for "mp3blaster" on LinuxBerg (http://www.linuxberg.com)
and either grab it from there or click on over to the software homepage,
which I can't recall at the moment.
Secondly (and here's that ever dreaded lesson :> );
When you crosspost to multiple newsgroups, ettiquete does declare that you
should set a followup-to: header line, as I've done above, to prevent
threads from being repeated (as somebody put it) in N+1 groups. It helps
keep this chaotic place we know and love called Usenet in some order. :>
Organized chaos, if you will.
Don't let certain less tasteful individuals dissuade you. Usually the
bunch in here (mostly in comp.os.linux.misc) are pretty helpful. I try
to stay away from the alt.* backbone of groups as much as possible. The
idiotchildren tend to levitate towards anything starting with alt, it
seems.
Good luck with your Linux endeavours, and I hope you'll continue to post
all your questions, comments, and concerns in here! Eventually, you'll be
one of the people answering questions just as much as you ask 'em!
Linux is a non-stop learning curve, and it's fun the whole way up. Have fun!

Some people have mentioned LaTeX. That's a macro package that sits on top
of TeX and some of us actually prefer plain TeX which presumably would use
even fewer resources. There's a nice document, "A Gentle Introduction to
TeX" by Michael Doob floating around on the internet that you might try
downloading.
Without a viewer for your screen (Which would require X-Windows), you can
only print drafts out to paper to see what it looks like, so expect to use
a lot of paper at first.

Yeah, and you should see the setup and monthly fees for their upgraded
access known as "@Work". I think it's still got the upload cap, however.
You have to have, I believe, @Work AND pay even more still for the removal
of the cap.
Rogers@Home doesn't seem to care about servers, though. One person I know
personally has sent well over 50G upstream in the period of one month, with
a combination of personnal FTP uploads as well as his suite of servers and
streaming webcam.
They only seem to take issue when you ask for money (ie: resell) for any
part of their bandwidth.
One person I knew on @Home down in the 'States was cut off at the knees
for asking $4/month for DNS hosting.

Out here it's a 384Kb/sec upload cap, which results in a max upload
bitrate of approximately 48KB/second.
(In longform; the cap is 384 Kilo Bits per Second, resulting in a
48 Kilo Byte per Second max transfer speed).

I have a SiS6326 PCI card running Xfree86 3.3.6 on an Intel VXD board.
I had to add a couple of lines to the Devices section of the XF86Config to get
it to run most of the time at 1024x768x16bit:
Option "fast_vram"
Option "ext_eng_queue"
This is using the XF86_SVGA server. I replaced the server from xfree with one
produced by Suse that claimed some further optimisation but I'm not sure it
works any better than the original. The server manages to detect the amount of
ram onboard OK.
I put this card in to try and accelerate my old P166 and wouldn't wish it on
anyone that actually wants to use the computer for anything other than trying
to waste time! The lack of support for the VGA_16 server precludes using any
of the graphical setup tools around and stops people from even trying out
Corel Linux - I'm using RedHat and love it :-)
About 50% of the time it either fails to find a socket to bind to when trying
to start X and crashes back to the command prompt or the mouse disappears.
The speed is noticeably worse than the cheap S3 Virge DX board I replaced,
particularly with video apps like Xawtv.
Under winblows95 the performance is a little faster than the S3 but it too
shows the little black squares for text for some fonts.
I think the task is a little unfair for a beginner! How about lending him a
video card that isn't so demanding until he gets it going and sort out the SiS
6326 later?
Good luck!

RPM is no garuntee you'll have a successful instllation either. I've
quite a few .rpm files failed to install.
At least, if you compile it yourself, if it fails, then, you can read
the debug message and *know* exactly what's missing, or what has gone
wrong. It might be as simple as editing the .configure or makefile a
little. As different distros have different directory structures is
quite common, you might not be really missing anything, but they're in a
different path.
And if you're really missing something, the debug message generated
during the config/make process will tells you exactly what you need, and
you can just install the missing parts, and recompile again.
But now, you'll know where everything is, if you compile everything
yourself, not to mention that you can customize it quite a bit.

Not necessarily. There is a nice dvi viewer for svgalib (if you can get svgalib
to work) called tmview (no URL here) which I use and it works quite nicely.
Also, maybe you can even get MGR to run (which is a low end windowing sustem).
It also has a dvi viewer.
And there are even tty-dvi viewer. Never tried one, but for draft versions they
may even give you an idea.

OK, I can format the disk with fdisk after reformatting it (low-level)
in Windows 98. The problem now is, I can't read the disk (unless I

I can't read it in Linux, because it gets some weird filesystem not

First remove the lilo boot loader from the MBR if you put it there.
The command
/sbin/lilo -u
should do it.
Make a new file called /etc/lilo.conf.floppy in which you change
the first line to
boot=/dev/fd0
Then with a blank floppy in your floppy drive, run
/sbin/lilo -C /etc/lilo.conf.floppy
You can then boot from that floppy with the kernel being taken
from your hard disk.
If you don't have the floppy in the floppy drive, the machine ought
to boot whatever it did before you installed lilo.

No, he isn't. You are discounting the possibility that someone else
might be able to learn to admin your server. You aren't _that_ much
smarter than everyone else...if you get my drift. You need to start
training those curious individuals who ask about Linux so that the next
