Hi!

I don't much about Mandrake, but i have seen, that there ist an update
for the man package on the ftp server:

ftp://ftp.linux.tucows.com/pub/distributions/Mandrake/Mandrake/updates/7.1/RPMS/

perhaps this will help.

    Greetings Torsten

Hi folks,

I modified something in /etc/silo.conf of an old Sparc Station 2 running
RedHat 4.2 and typed "/sbin/silo", no errors. After rebooting SILO
aborts because of a syntax error in silo.conf and asks for a path to the
kernel at the command line. I neither know where the kernel is nor what
the filename is. What can I do? Has someone a boot floppy whith a kernel
so I can boot from floppy and repair silo.conf? How can I boot a Sparc
Station 2 from floppy?

Greetings,

OK, I have the same problem (kind off).

I have a couple of switches BEHIND my firewall which have to be accessible from
the outside. So I want to be able to forward ALL ip-traffic to those machines.

When I do:
        # route add -host $IP dev eth0
I can reach the switch (which has an IP-address that should be on the outside,
I know this should change, but bare with me).
Then, when I do an:
        # ifconfig eth1:1 $IP
I can reach the firewall using the IP-address of the switch.
Now when i bring the interface down using:
        # ifconfig eth1:1 $IP down
I can reach the switch behind the firewall using it's own IP-address for like
90 seconds (that's when the intermediate router decides to empty it's ARP-entry
:-)

OK, actually this is exactly what I want to achiev (only all the time instead
of just 1.5 minutes :-)

I want to reach telnet, snmp, http, and even ping of all the machines.

anyone know how to do this (port forwarding is out, but I was more thinking of
... ip-forwarding... ???)

Last 10 users:

$ last | head -n 10

For listing users who were logged in to a computer at a certain time,
write a script that takes the output of the 'last' command and goes
through it, line by line, filtering out uninteresting lines.

Some common names and locations of the kernel (alas, maybe not on
Sparc systems): '/vmlinuz', '/boot/vmlinuz' or '/boot/vmlinuz-2.2.15'
(where "2.2.15" is the version number of the kernel).

Does SILO display the erroneous line?

MH,

Xmms is pretty good for playing soundfiles, there is also a mpeg-plugin
available. All this info is on http://www.xmms.org/, there is a link on
the mainpage where you can download the movie plug-in.

Hope this helps..

Hello there,
recently I had to reconfigure my linux internet gateway. I use
squid as a proxy wich works fine. For masq. I use ipchains. I
defined a policy wich forwards any requests outside my private
net to the internet. But when i try to ping a host on the
internet it still complains that it can't find the network. At
the moment I can't send any logs since I am using a palm handheld
for news acces. I use the same setup as described in the masq.
howto, I just adapted it to my own net.
Can anybody give me some points to start searching on what is
wrong?

Thanks in advance,

Why get a hub until you need one? To get practice choosing and ordering hubs?

I have a long straight cable and a 12 inch crossover cable in series (why get
stuck with a lot of long crossover cables?). Only when I get a third device on
my LAN will I need a hub. So I will have wasted only the cost of a 1 foot long
crossover cable. Meanwhile, the cost of a hub can be used elsewhere, or
invested.

Many moons ago I installed debian 2.0 on my 486 using floppies for the
base system and an official cd for the packages.
I've just tried to repeat the process with version 2.2. The base system
is ok - from floppies, but I'm having trouble with the cd.
I can mount it and wander the directories but any attempt to copy files
from it fails with i/o errors ( detail below ).
The same is true under Windows 95 ( on the same box ) - I can see all
the files on the cd
but cannot copy them to disk.
I've not had any problems with other cds on the same box. On the other
hand I can read and copy from the cd on a dec unix box.
Could it be some subtle change in the cd format or is my machine just
inconsistent?
UPDATE
Actually I've now found that I can copy some files but not others. The
failures are consistent ( ie it's the same files that cannot be
read/copied ).
One example of a failure is tetex-base_1.0-10.deb ( 10999680bytes ) - I
get an I/O failure on any attempt to read/copy it.

The cd is attached to a SoundBlaster card and uses sbpcd0.

Not really. You are the one that will have to provide the clues. The most anyone
else can do is help interpret them.

You might consider this, though:

It may be that you do not have an NEC MultiSync FE700 monitor. (understatement
of the day) I am not pushing NEC monitors. Perhaps yours does not have a synch
detector relay in it (or something equivalent), so it may behave differently
from mine. Actually, I was surprised there is a relay in mine. I assume most
monitors do this electronically instead of electromechanically.

I just remembered I have another machine running Red Hat Linux 6.0. It has an
ATI video card and a Samsung SyncMaster 4Ne. It has no realy, but it works the
same as this. I.e., when I press C-A-F1, the screen goes blank, and then a
command line interpreter shell comes up. When I press C-A-F7, X Window System
comes back up.

If it is a monitor problem, perhaps you can merely turn off the monitor and not
the computer. Then turn on the monitor again.

Can you ever get your machine to work in command line mode? I.e., can you diddle
/etc/inittab to come up in run state 3 instead of run state 5 (I am making
assumptions about what happens in each run level on your machine here)? Does it
work that way? It could save you the trouble of rebooting with badly saved file
systems.

I wonder if there is some problem with the driver for your monitor and video
card. I know there could be problems with having the X Window system set up
wrong, but I do not recall if there is something for the plain command line
interpreter consoles. You might look around in there.

You only need add line to conf.modules at /etc like this:
