Hmmm. You may have missed the point. I think those scripts
did run. The associations appear to be there, in netscape.

I'm just wondering why the auto-configure feature can't
find a server, and the only whay to get it to work
is to setup real player to use only HTTP protocol.
I figured it should work on install, and I shouldn't
have to mess with the preferences.

I do not know how much help I can be but I am willing to work with you.
I have RedHat 7.1 which I downloaded from the RedHat FTP. I bought a Z52
this weekend because I like Lexmark printers (I already own an
unsupported in Linux Z42) and I wanted to print in Linux. I installed
the Z52 driver from Lexmark and nothing would print. I decided to try
rebooting. During the boot process a bunch of Windbond parrallel port
configuration stuff showed up for the first time and printing worked. In
the readme file that comes with the driver it shows how to make a small
modification for USB operation, but I have not tried it. Here is my
printcap, if it may help.

Remember the rule?
Don't upgrade your system on Fridays because stores are closed on
weekends, he-he...
I feel I'll end up doing that but it'll delay it by a couple of days,
and I want it now :)

As the matter of fact I installed RH on another machine with enough
RAM (that RAM didn't work in the comp. I'm trying to set up RH on)
and then transplanted the hard drive to my low-budget machine,
and surprisingly it works. Not sure if this the right way to do it.
Can somebody tell me if Linux configures itself during installation
for the specific motherboard resources or it reconfigures itself
on every boot, so what I did is actually OK?

You're right , 32M requirement is bogus, for the services I run it takes
less than 16M of RAM.

Cheers,
-V.

Ten years ago running X in 16Mb was _painful_. 20Mb or better
yet 32Mb made it reasonable (or, what was reasonable when a
486DX66 was about as good as it got without a second mortgage to
do better). I doubt in the years since that X or anything else
has gotten smaller.

Personally though, I would NOT buy more memory for a 486Mb, but
instead would go look for a pentium motherboard. Pentium boards
that are several times faster than a 486 cost peanuts...

I'm in the process of a slow migration to linux - but I need
recommendations regarding mail and news clients.

Mandrake 7.1 kernel 2.2.15-4 KDE desktop

On my windows box I am using, and am totally satisfied with Forte Free
Agent for news, which newsclient would people suggest for my linux
machine. The features of the Forte package I particularly like are the
ease of navigation, the automatic expansion of threads, and the fact
that I can mark threads for automatic download of message bodies when
only downloading headers. Had a go with KNews but having trouble
getting it to play as I want :-)

There are free shell accounts available, do a search. However, most
will limit the commands you can use.

Had I known you had another machine, I would have suggested that disk
switch. Glad to hear your up and running.

Took a power hit? Do you mean you just turned off the machine while the
filesystem was mounted? Then you ask for FS errors. ext2 is not
journaling. Besides the above message means, that there were no serious
trouble at all.

You mean that you haven't got any errors (yet) with the new RAM? Sounds
like a bad RAM block...

/dev/sndstat is an OSS (OpenSoundSystem) feature. es1371 is a non-OSS
driver and thus does not support /dev/sndstat (nor /proc/sound).

You should be able to get it by somehow configuring OSS - but I'm not
100% sure.

I have a SB PCI 64, and I have never used /dev/sndstat nor /proc/sound
but my card works fine anyway.

Subject: CD writer access (long post)
Date: Sun, 06 May 2001 20:39:58 +0100

I've having fun with my Mitsumi CR-4804TE cd-writer. I can
burn and read CDs no problem. As root. When it comes to doing
this as an ordinary user, it's another story.

I use kernel 2.4.3 and kmod. I burn CDs as root and am not
bothered about ordinary users using the writing capability.
But I would like to be able to play audio CDs and mount data
ones without having to be root.

Support for the cd-writer is not compiled into the kernel, but
as modules:

ide-cd, ide-scsi, sr_mod, sg, scsi_mod

Configuration is as follows:

/etc/lilo.conf
=============
append="hdc=ide-scsi"

/etc/modules.conf
=================
alias scd0 sr_mod
alias scsi_hostadapter ide-scsi
pre-install sg     modprobe -k ide-scsi
pre-install sr_mod modprobe -k ide-scsi
pre-install ide-scsi modprobe -k ide-cd
options ide-cd ignore=hdc

/etc/fstab
==========
/dev/cdrom /cdrom iso9660 ro,noauto,user 0 0

In addition, I've changed the permissions on the
/dev/scd*, /dev/sg*, /dev/sr* so that access is
available, as this seems to be something to
do with permissions.

So, when I try to access the cd device I get the following
error messages:

/var/log/messages
=================
May 6 16:00:16 east kernel: SCSI subsystem driver Revision: 1.00
May 6 16:00:16 east kernel: Uniform CD-ROM driver unloaded
..repeating

/var/log/syslog
===============
May  6 16:00:16 east insmod:
/lib/modules/2.4.3/kernel/drivers/scsi/scsi_mod.o: pre-install sr_mod
failed
May  6 16:00:16 east insmod:
/lib/modules/2.4.3/kernel/drivers/scsi/scsi_mod.o: insmod block-major-11
failed
..repeating

I've done a lot of searching, and have tried many
different suggestions, to no avail. Again, everything
works fine as root.

Any ideas?
