Hi

I have just installed RH7 on my PC and for some reason my backspace and
delete keys do not delete in a shell under X-Window (GNOME). All they do is
beep everytime I use them. I've tried to tried to configure the keyboard and
have set it to my locale but to no avail. The two keys work fine without
X-Window.

Any ideas on how to fix this?

Cheers.

I can't give you much real help, but I can offer
some encouragement. I got my Archive Python DAT
drive to work without a problem. I can suggest
that you look at the manual for the drive to
figure out if there might be a hardware problem --
or even try the drive under Windows, which might
allow you to set up your drive easier, initially
(try a W98 or W2K backup program, for example).
You can read the manual page for mt (and st) and
I think there may be a well-known HOWTO for
tapes. I'm not sure if it will help, but you can
look in the linux source code tree, too. But I
just ran something like 'mt status' and figured
out that /dev/tape was not set up, so I linked it
to /dev/nst0 and away it went. I can do multi-
volume tars; everything seems to work.

See below where I have copied your questions.

I don't visit this newsgroup often. If you want
to ask me a question (not sure that I can offer
much more help), email me at
[EMAIL PROTECTED] (remove "SMAMLESS).

I'm not sure what might cause this. Could it be
a hardware problem: SCSI cable problem, dirty or
busted drive? Bad tape? I think maybe remember
something like this happening to me when I had a
SCSI configuration problem. If your cable, SCSI
addresses, termination, SCSI adaptor and drive
are all right, you should have no problem, I
think (assuming your drive has no major quirk --
and I doubt that).

The SCSI commands that go out over the SCSI bus
are standardised. I believe the "Not Ready"
indicates some particular reply was not returned
from the drive. I'm not sure if this is normal
or not. If you're still having trouble, I'll
check this next time I boot my Linux system and
see what I get. I'm pretty sure it is not "Not
Ready".

There's basically nothing to it if you have the
scsi tape module (st), which dmesg is indicating
you do.

Sorry to say this is inacurate. IBM is not supporting OS/2 4.0 in anyway starting Jan
2001
. I strongly discurage OS/2 as an option.

Based on the hardware you are discribing I would have to recommend Linux. or Solaris
X86

Subject: Problems setting up HP ScanJet 4P
Date: Sun, 22 Oct 2000 21:46:27 -0500

Greetings everyone,

I am having trouble getting an HP ScanJet 4p to work with Redhat 6.1. I
am not new to Linux and have configured many devices and systems but
this one is being very stubborn. The scanner is connected to a an SCSI
card and under Windows, it resides at 0x240 IRQ 10. The card is also
plug and play, which by itself should not be a problem, as I just
comment out the necessary lines in the isapnp.conf file and no problems
are reported on startup of isapnp. I then insmod the sym53c416.o
modules using: insmod sym53c416.o sym53c416=0x240,10

No errors are reported, but the device is then not found using the
various SANE tools. I check the HP SANE FAQ and find that if I don't
get the last three lines in my var/log/messages file, something has gone
wrong. Only they don't tell me what that something could be:

(snipped from the FAQ...)

insmod sym53c416

If it worked, have a look at the file /var/log/messages. If the scanner
was
switched on, messages like these should appear:

Aug 6 17:16:13 algol kernel: sym53c416.c: Version 1.0.0
Aug 6 17:16:13 algol kernel: scsi0 : Symbios Logic 53c416 (rev. 151) at
0x200, irq 4, SCSI-ID 7, fast pio
Aug 6 17:16:13 algol kernel: scsi : 1 host.
Aug 6 17:16:14 algol kernel: Vendor: HP Model:
C5110A Rev: 3638
Aug 6 17:16:14 algol kernel: Type:
Processor ANSI SCSI revision: 02
Aug 6 17:16:14 algol kernel: Detected scsi generic sga at scsi0,
channel 0, id 3, lun 0

If you dont see a message about Vendor/Model/Type, something went wrong
and you dont need to try the find-scanner tool of SANE. It will not
show the scanner.

(End of Snip)

The entry in my isapnp.conf file is below:

Has anyone experienced trouble with this card and found a workaround?
It seemed very straightforward to set up and reports no problems. It
seems to not be able to completely load the module. Other information
which may be relevant is that I have a non PNP sound blaster card on
0x220 IRQ 5, a PNP modem on IRQ 3, com2 and a 3Com Etherlink III card
which I am leaving disabled for now in my isapnp.conf file.

Any tips would be appreciated. This computer belongs to my sister who
is wanting to make the switch to Linux for her graphic design work. She
has seen the GIMP and Star Office and is completely committed to getting
rid of Windows if I can just get the damn scanner working.

Thanks in advance!

Mark

Perhaps you should try the correct device files - which are NOT
the /dev/ttyS* but the /dev/ttyC* ones. If you don't have the correct
device files in your /dev directory, you'll have to create them using
the mknod command.

the same.

Debain package management is fantastic, you can achieve full automation of
package updates and bug fixing. With Debian, no more failed dependencies when
installing a package, just select it and apt will do the rest for you.

I've used RedHat for 2 years, and RPM seemed good for me those days, but
once I discovered apt, rpm looks like a toy. With RedHat 7.0, they have launched
the RedHat Network, that AFAIK tries to automate package managing and
updating throug a web system, which you must subscribe to (and pay for).

Subject: qmail setup under Red Hat 6.2
Date: Sun, 22 Oct 2000 21:22:02 GMT

Hi,

I am attempting to install qmail 1.03 on a machine running Red Hat Linux
6.2. Prior to this, I used sendmail exclusively. The main problem I am
having is with local mail delivery. Outgoing messages seem fine, but
incoming messages only show a few lines of header information - no body
of the message or extended header information, for example:

>From [EMAIL PROTECTED] Fri Oct 20 10:48:02 2000
Return-Path: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Delivered-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Status: RO
X-Status:
X-Keywords:
X-UID: 685

This message should have contained the text "This is a test...".

My sendmail.cf file contains:

Mlocal, P=/usr/bin/procmail, F=lsDFMAw5:/|@qSPfhn9, S=10/30,
R=20/40,
                T=DNS/RFC822/X-Unix,
                A=procmail -Y -a $h -d $u

and my current /var/qmail/rc file contains:

exec env - PATH="/var/qmail/bin:$PATH" \
qmail-start '|dot-forward .forward
|preline procmail' splogger qmail

I'm guessing that the problem is that I don't quite call procmail right
from /var/qmail/rc, so I am wondering what other people are using for
local mail delivery on Red Hat Linux 6.2 boxes? If you are using
procmail, what arguments do you pass to it in /var/qmail/rc? Can
someone give me an example /var/qmail/rc file so that I can get all of
my header information and the body of the message? Thanks!

   - Doug -

P.S. - I have attempted calling procmail with the -Y and -d flags, but
still do not receive the text of incoming emails...

First thought was that in the anticipation of driving your bright, shiny custom
kernel, you might have overlooked the fact that COM ports are numbered from COM1
and ttyS* starts at ttyS0. Looks like you didn't make that mistake. (Maybe).

When I built a new kernel (2.2.16) for my RH6.0 box a couple months or so ago, I
was also greeted with the same message Kppp gives you. After posting here, I
received two pieces of helpful information -- both pointing to Kppp as the
culprit. One said simply that Kppp needed to be updated to the latest version.
The other went a bit further, stating (I'm doing this from memory, now) that my
Kppp contained a workaround for a bug in kernel 2.2.5 and once the kernel was
fixed, Kppp didn't work right. I was also sent advice to forget Kppp and follow
the instructions at http://axion.physics.ubc.ca/ppp-linux.html
This worked out real well for me. YMMV.
