Subject: Uvfat2
Date: 14 Feb 2001 22:24:22 GMT
Uvfat would be very useful to Window 9x users who want to dual boot
Linux & Win9x without reparitioning, Since the orginal uvfat is dead,
and the source is offically gone, uvfat2 would be harder to implement.
However (keeping in mind that I've never seen uvfat's orginal code nor do
I know of how it came to be), I believe (keeping in mind that I'm a newbie
C programmer) that one could modify the umsdos source code to provide the
missing functionality of uvfat. (Uvfat2 WILL NOT be intergrated w/ umsdos,
mereky based heavily apon it.) For version 0.0, replace all the msdos
filesystem calls with the vfat ones. Uvfat2 v0.0 will act just like umsdos.
Uvfat2 0.1 will have enhaced filename handling code. Here's the trick I bet
(keeping in mind that I've never seen uvfat's orginal code) uvfat's orginal
creators never thought of: keep the file names stored in those ---linux--.---
files. Basicly, you just keep the filename in the ---linux--.--- file,
and write the filename with vfat's driver. This brings the problem that
the original creators had: what to do with same case names? Uvfat2 v0.1
will be worse off, but v0.2 will be partly fixed. You see, since names are
still stored in those ---linux--.--- files, you simply test to see if a
filenameon a uvfat2 fs has a filename that differs only by case. If so,
then you just turn it into a umsdos filename, and store that file name in the
--linux--.--- file. Like this:
A okay name:
AB = AB
Bad name: (case diffrence)
ab = ab.}01 (or whatever)
Clever, huh? v0.2 will only partly impement this, ie. ab = ab.}01 not stored.
In other words, v0.2 will have exactly the same problems as the orginal
uvfat/.
Uvfat v0.3 will have this, however, so you can finally get a perfect uvfat
system. There is one more step, however. Vfat can't handle certain characters
that Unix fs's can. Therefore, Uvfat2 v0.4 will have translation from a
filename with bad chars to a umsdos file name. However, like v0.2, it isn't
stored yet in the main file. v0.5 will do this. after that, and lots of
testing, uvfat2 will be ready to become version 1.0, hopefully soon.
Also, as this method can be applied to any umsdos code, 2.0, 2.2, and 2.4
can have this support. (Even though 2.0 has old uvfat, since it can't store
filenames file uvfat2 v0.3 can, uvfat2 will still replace it anyways.) With
my method, I believe Uvfat will live again! I hope that someone decides to
try to start uvfat2 for me, as I lack the techincal skill to do so as of yet.
(But I am learning :) Thank you for your time.
P.S. I know my versioning scheme is dumb. v0.0, v0.1, and v0.2 can be
combined
into one version, then lots more for testing, then v0.4 & v0.5 can be one, and
then more versions due to more testing again. And I know that I skip from v0.5
to v1.0, but since my scheme doesn't need more (improvements upon diffrent
revisions, such as bug crunching for v0.3, will have diffrent increments, ie.
first v0.3 is v0.3.0, next is v0.3.1, and so on. That said, I would also like
to point out that my scheme can be ajusted to fit to your needs. So if you
don't like something that I mentioned here, you don't have to impelement that.
I really don't care about that, since getting a working Uvfat2 is the most
important thing.
P.P.S. I call it Uvfat2 since Uvfat was a failure (lower & upper case didn't
work out), and the code is gone, so Uvfat2 will be remade from scratch. (I
know
I said it would be based on Umsdos, but it's based on scratch since it has
none
of uvfat's orginal code in it.)

It answers the port, but never responds, just hangs until the client
times out.
(Sure identd is silly, but I use a service that likes to see it.)

I cannot get into my system. When I try to login at the console, I type my

happens. When I try to connect via telnet I get the system id, but no
prompt for user name. When I type my user name and press enter, the cursor

Has this happened to anybody out there? Essentially, I am locked out of my

like that? What should I try next to resolve this problem? Thanks in

That is very strange. At what point does initialization fail, as you put it ?
Do you
actually see 'DPT RAIDx' ( where x is the raid number ) on the DPT
banner ( in place of the brand name and model number of the
your SCSI drives ) when you boot the machine ? How did you build the array ?

The following program gets a Memory Fault (Core Dumped) when it is
run under Redhat 6.2 (and probably other versions too). I assume
that the local variable is simply too large to fit on the stack.
Does anyone know how the maximum stack size is controlled under Linux?
int main( int argc, char *argv[] )

char large[4][1024][2048] ;
large[0][0][0] = 0 ;

I have a Mandrake 7.2 workstation (experimental at this stage: one
more challenge to meet!)
It's on a network with 2 NT workstations and a Red Hat server, which
is the main print server, running SAMBA (and successfully, for the NT
boxes).
However, whilst I can run Kups and configure the network printer
(using SAMBA or direct) and even print test pages, I can't see it from
within applications. StarOffice cn see it's there, but cn't seem to
print to it - when i try, I get a message in the printer status that
says "ERRDOS - ERRfilexists opening remote file (stdin)"
Can anyone shed a light on this? Have I made a rash assumption that,
like other GUIs, once you configure a printer, the applications should
be able to see it?

You can download and install at the same time! Download the net bootdisk and
when it prompts for installation method choose ftp and point it to sunsite
or freesoftware.com. I use this method all the time why waste cds and or
disk space downloading iso's when you can just do it from the net. Im

Does anyone know what is required to make a modules disk for SuSE,
so I can get the rigth modules for eth0 and/or drives in use under
installation.
I've made my own net-mod.gz images that contain the modules I want for
network,
but they don't show up on the list when I choose LOAD MODULES.
I can trick SuSE to load the modules if I overwrite or use another
modules (file)name,
the module will work but ofcourse the identification will be all wrong.
I think that somewhere a list of the modules must be stored on the
bootdisk,
but I have not located it or found what identifies the list with the
files on the gzip image.
Any help is appriciated :-)

You can certainly look at the file with your favorite editor/pager.
Another option is to use the 'file' utility. `file <path to file>`
will usually tell you what type of file it is... (assuming the correct
she-bang header for interpreted files). It even recognizes some other
files like Word documents, picture formats, etc...

Strictly speaking, there is no such thing as a "file extension" on
Unix and its derivatives.
The "extension" on other operating systems (MVS, VMS, GCOS, CP/M, and
such all leaping to mind as ancestors from which Microsoft ultimately
copied the concept) is a separate component of the file "name."
And if you look carefully, you will find that there is only a
"filename" component on the children of Unix.
Being pedantic, it would be more correct to call it a "suffix." And
the operating system does between zero and nothing to enforce any
conventions surrounding suffixes.
Certain _applications_ may look at the suffix, and do something based
on the suffix. Make would be a good example of that.
But the part of the kernel that decides how to exec() a program does
precisely _nothing_ about the suffix; it looks at the executable bits
on the file as well, quite possibly, at the "magic number" that it
gets by looking at the first few bytes of the file.
But it is pretty critical to understand that the file suffix has
_nothing_ to do with the way the kernel executes programs.
Applications, on the other hand, can do whatever they want, and often
do. Apache is likely to assume that an ".html" or ".htm" suffix
indicates, well, guess :-). And a suffix of ".shtm" or ".shtml" may
also get interpreted somehow. And a suffix of .pl may be interpreted
one way or another. Or .py, or .pyc, ...
But as soon as you start heading down such roads, you're not asking a
"Linux" question, but are asking about the behaviour of a specific
program, and so need to name the program so that people can respond
usefully.

Not to be too picky here, but Linux is your operating system. Your
Linux distribution will be something like Debian, RedHat (what I'd assume
you are running), Mandrake, Slackware, and a whole host of others...
And although it's none of my business, I'd assume that you probably
should learn a bit more about Linux before trying to run an FTP
server. Not that this is necessarily the reason that you've been
cracked, but this is the type of thing that gets alot of Linux
newbies in trouble - and many times turns them off to Linux.

I haven't fetched my news yet but I saw this via Deja/Google
and copied/pasted.
The day after telling you about appindex I hit a major problem.
What's the size of your appindex.db file? Mine is now 14 bytes and useless.
When I ran fetchappindex to get a new database it only took a second
which I knew was wrong. So I went straight to the ftp site and
see that the appindex.db is wrong.
ftp://ftp.penguin.cz/pub/users/mhi/appindex/db/:
Feb 14 06:13 bzip2 LSM.current.bz2 347Kb
Feb 14 06:13 gunzip LSM.current.gz 443Kb
Feb 14 06:13 bzip2 appindex.db.bz2 14 bytes
Feb 14 06:13 gunzip appindex.db.gz 20 bytes
The dates are being updated daily but something isn't working.
I sent email to the author/maintainer but no reply yet.
This really made me upset as now I can no longer use appindex without
a database. I have an older database on another machine but that's
rather outdated in this fast-moving world.
Some other discoveries. I've only used the LSM database once a long
time ago. This time I tried and it failed. The scripts use lynx
to get the files and I wind up with a 1.5MB file with gz extension
that isn't gzipped.
If I change the scripts to use .bz2 then it works correctly.
Why use lynx though so I changed the script files to use wget instead.
Since appindex.db is broken you can at least see how it works with
the LSM database.
Simple fetchlsm script change for wget.

Dan,
There is one way that I'm familiar with (not that other ways don't exist)...
If the files under a particular directory are to be of the same group,
you can cause those files to always take on the group of the parent directory
by setting the SUID group bit in the directory. In other words,
chmod g+s directory_name
This might be too narrow a scope to solve your problem...

For those running Mandrake:
The postfix rpm that comes with Mandrake 7.0 works fine with Redhat
6.2, I suspect that any Mandrake/Redhat releases of similar vintage
allow this. The compatibility goes both ways.
