Subject: HELP! mkisofs problem: can't create iso image!
Date: Wed, 07 Feb 2001 22:58:43 GMT
I'm using mkisofs-1.13-3mdk on RedHat 6.2 Linux. I'm trying to create
the iso image of a directory tree:
# mkisofs -J -r -o /mnt/dos/distr.iso /mnt/dos/distr
I get a strange error during the ISO creation. This is one example:
(...)
69.80% done, estimate finish Wed Feb 7 20:47:41 2001
71.64% done, estimate finish Wed Feb 7 20:48:03 2001
mkisofs: No such file or directory. cannot read from
/mnt/dos/distr/linux/squid.kit/ncsa_auth
At this point the command is aborted.
The particular dirtree in on a DOS/FAT mounted partition, but I also
tried copying it entirely to a ext2 partition and it didn't help: same
error exactly in the same point.
The file "with problem" has no problem: I can read, edit, copy it etc.
normally. It is there and I don't know why mkisofs cannot find it.
I had this error with several different files. What worked most was:
- renaming the file to something else
- moving the directory to another level
I almost thought the problem was related to files that had, in their
filenames, the same first characters as the directory name (e.g.
/mnt/dos/distr/qmail/qmail.gz). Thus renaming them usually worked. But
the example above does not have this characteristic, as some other cases
don't have it either.
If I try hard (renaming and moving), I'm able to create the iso image
and burn a CD with no problems. But this is a tiring process, since the
errors tend to show up further and further to the end of the mkisofs
process (in the example above, I got rid of several previous errors and
I got this one at 71%).
I had the same problem with mkisofs-1.8 (the original one with RH 6.2).
Upgrading to version 1.13 was no help. I'm using the 2.2.16-3 kernel
(the one available in the errata site of Red Hat).
Any help will be appreciated.
Bill.

no, no, no need! As long as you put Linux's bootables (/boot) within the
8.4GB [first 1024 cyl?], Linux can access other partitions beyond since it
no longer uses the bios after booting.

So are there plans in the future for ACL's. I just read something about
NSA doing security mods which I would guess include ACLs. Anyone know?

Use jed; at least 80% of the features of emacs at 20% of the footprint.
It comes with SuSE. The KDE editor also has syntax highlighting.

Hi,
anybody knows a free Linux software to convert a sequence of images
(tiffs or whatever) into a common movie format (mpeg, avi, rpl....).
So far I have only a dinosaur mpeg-code from U. of Berkeley.
Thanks

A least from emacs 20.x.x on there is the help->customize->... menu.
Here you can make the generic setups, like hilit etc.
With increasing experience and fascination you will look into simple
lisp-programming and fine tune the .emacs file.
It is a slowly rising fascination, but there is nothing more powerful
than emacs (only my opinion, of course)

Most CompactFlash cards use a FAT16 compatible file system. Should work as
FAT, although I've never tried what you are doing.

Here's some additional information from the pre-order page at
<http://shop.borland.com/Category/0,1257,3-15-1080,00.html>
Kylix Server Developer $1,999.00
Kylix Desktop Developer $999.00
Borland's products also have a high cost of ownership. Speaking from
personal experience with Borland C++ Builder, they essentially abandon
each version shortly after it hits the market and then try to sell you
the revised product at 50% of the full-product price. If they continue
this strategy under linux, then we're looking at $1000 up-front plus
roughly $500 every 12-18 months to keep kylix up-to-date.
No doubt they'll eventually release a hobbyist-oriented version
that'll be more-reasonably priced. Like C++ Builder Standard for
Windows it will probably be little more than a stripped-down
educational tool, and useless for serious development.

depends on the work load. if you have several compute intensive programws (or
only one that you use frequently) it is a good idea (for servers i would
always go for it). in typical workstation settings it is less likely that

Well, PostgreSQL allows "registering functions," which might then be
attached to triggers.
See:
<http://www.postgresql.org/users-lounge/docs/7.0/postgres/sql-createfunction.htm>
It would also be worth looking at InterBase, which supports stored
procedures in more traditional form.
It should also be worth looking at SAPDB,
<http://www.sap.com/solutions/technology/sapdb/> which is essentially
a renamed, repackaged version of the fairly well-known Adabas-D RDBMS.
It is not yet available in "open source" form, but SAP's project plan
is for the release of the DB "kernel" under (I believe) the GPL to
take place in April, which is not very far away.
They're running a _little_ behind schedule, as they anticipated having
the LGPLed source distribution for tools and interfaces available in
January, which does not seem to have taken place yet, but otherwise
seem to have been playing pretty straight thus far.
These releases of well-known, mature commercial DBMSes are extremely
encouraging...

Subject: VIA AC97 sound trouble
Date: Wed, 07 Feb 2001 17:55:54 +0100
Hello!
Using Suse 6.4, Kernel 2.2.14 with a VIA AC97 soundchip I have some
problem with sound under linux.
The kernel drivers don't support the chip, so I had to find out that
ALSA might be helpful (and OSS, which for various reasons proves to be
an even inferior solution for me).
With ALSA I can listen to wav, au, mp3, cd audio, but not to midi,
which, however, is not the real problem I am talking about (there is a
program called "timidity" which gives me midi sound by on-the-fly
converting midi to wav without touching the midi files, so that is
o.k.).
Here is - finally - my problem:
I can't get sound to work with the quake games series (especially quake
and quakeworld), and ALSA even mentions that quake has to segfault
because there is a problem with "mmap" (whatever that means). So without
sound I am unable and unwilling to play these games.
Is there any realistic alternative to get quake sound under linux with a
VIA AC97 (and without upgrading the kernel to 2.3.x or 2.4, where I
found some experimental stuff with www.google.com)?
Someone of you all with VIA AC97 got a good solution? Or is this
hopeless?
Thanks
Peter

I have not used USB, but -t vfat should work. In a pcmcia adapter
it shows up in my logs as /dev/hde, and /dev/hde1 is the device I mount.
(my CF was originally used in Cassiopeia and also Win95/98)
