What if you already have "wermit"?

O.k. either you don't have the libraries installed or your
library/include paths are not setup right
type 'rpm -q glibc-devel' if you don't have either this go to
http://rufus.w3.org/linux/RPM and download and install it.
to find out which version to get type 'rpm -q glibc' get the same
version of glibc-devel
if it is installed open kde find utility, you did say you had kde
right? if not type 'man find' and read instructions for the text based
version. Use find to see if you have stdio.h (you should if glibc-devel
is installed, if not then reinstall a new copy of glibc-devel) If you
have stdio.h tell me where it is at and we can go from there.

Subject: 2.2.1 upgrade; kernel panic; superblock problem
Date: Mon, 15 Feb 1999 18:55:52 GMT
Hello all--
I recently upgraded from 2.0.34 to 2.2.1 (debian 2.0 installation; new
modutils as well). I was able to boot okay once and then get every service
working (ppp, tcp/ip and nfs) the way I wanted. I then rebooted.
Unfortunately, now I get a kernel panic when trying to mount the root
partition.
Under FreeBSD I would just "point" myself at another kernel from the a boot
prompt and then I'd boot with the other kernel on disk. How can I do this
with Linux?
Like an idiot, I didn't make a 2.2.1 floppy image, but I do have a 2.0.34
debian rescue diskette (as well as a 2.0.34 boot floppy containing my system
config).
FSCK complains about a bad Superblock. . .(I've also tried 8193) and it
doesn't seem happy about this. Anyhow, is there something I should have done
differently or is this just a non-fortuitous coincidence.
BTW: I did select IDE support to be compiled in (IOW it is _not_ compiled in
as a module).
Thanks for any thoughts besides re-install. . .I'm not quite ready for that
yet.

This is absolutely right _IF_ the install goes well. When Win95 first
came out did you see how many posts there were in the WIn95 NGs from
people trying to upgrade from Win3.1 and then throwing in the towel
because it didn't recognize their hardware properly? Or, it thought it
was one thing but it was something else? If it works, it's nice, but
when it doesn't work, it's a bear and no better than Linux in that case.

Subject: Missing /dev/sda16
Date: Mon, 15 Feb 1999 12:00:54 -0800
Hello,
I have Redhat 5.2 installed on a 4.5 GB Ultra2 IBM SCSI drive. The
system dual boots OS2 and Linux. I have partioned the drive so that
fdisk under Linux lists up to /dev/sda16, which I use as my swap
partition. My fstab file also lists /dev/sda16 as the swap partition and
it is identified as type 82 under fdisk. The problem is this: when I
boot Linux, the swap partition does not mount--when I use 'top' there is
no indication of swap space, 'top' says 0k av, 0k used, 0k free. If I
try to enable the swap partition after booting into Linux I get an error
that indicates /dev/sda16 does not exist. I checked the /dev directory
and sure enough there is no 'sda16' . What do I do now?
Thanks,
Eusebio Garate

Date: Mon, 15 Feb 1999 15:51:41 GMT
Greetings!
I am porting an old SGI application to linux.
I am experiencing several problems:
(1) libgen.h not found. My attempts to hack one with linux posix
regex.h has not been successful.
I would appreciate if someone could provide one or more of the following:
(1) Is libgen.h available on linux. If so how can I get it?
In source form so I can compile it for this app.
(2) The app. seems to parsing F77 floats
of the form <sign><number><decimal_dot><number><[eEdD]><sign><number>
Could someone provide the correct reg. exp for this and the stubs to use it.
My attempts could have failed in either step.
--SGI specific procinfo file system---
This application seems to have used the procinfo file system to
check if a F77 process is active or died and read from the output
of this F77 process.
I am trying to rewrite this segment with exec and std unix practices.
However, I would appreciate if anyone has an idea or the location
where procinfo library is available.
THank you
Any other experience porting this kind of app. from sgi to linux
is also welcome.
Thank you much,
Raman Kannan

An external modem, lucky bugger. I've got a Winmodem. Useless.
Well...
Try to ping loopback on the Linux box. IP is 127.0.0.1 IIRC.
Try to ping the Linux boxes hostname, or whatever IP number you gave it.
On another tack, are you sure that there is no conflict between both
devices?
What serial port (com, IRQ & Address) is the modem attached to?
What IRQ & address is the netcard taking?
I ask caouse i've seen those network cards sitting on IRQ 3 at times.

The first thing I'd do is simplify /etc/lilo.conf and run lilo, so it
boots RH and ignores /dev/hda. Once you've tested that, boot RH and
su to root, then 'fdisk /dev/hda' and change its partitioning scheme
so it contains 1 or more ext2 partitions. This will wipe Win95. Then
'mke2fs' the partition(s) you just allocated.
Then 'fsck /dev/hda1' and any other partitions you made on hda, and put
a line in /etc/fstab like this:
/dev/hda1 /usr1 ext2 user,noauto 1 2
and create /usr1. Now 'mount /usr1' and 'df' should show it mounted and
empty. Now you need to copy what's in /usr to /usr1:
(cd /usr;tar cf - .) | (cd /usr1; tar xvfp - )
This is from the TIPS HOWTO.
Now 'umount /usr1'. You may want to fsck it, too. Replace the new line
in fstab so it mounts hda1 as '/usr' with 'default' options, and
'mount /usr' should look like before. If all OK, 'umount /usr' and
'rm -rf /usr/*' to recover disk space on hdb and 'mount /usr' again.
If you get 'device busy' you need to 'cd /' to make it un-busy.
I hope this helps. I take no responsibility for lost data. Of course,
you've already backed up your data, right?

No you miss the point. Which was lying under oath (a felony) and obstruction
of justice (another felony). It has nothing to do with sexual misconduct.
This is the problem with most Americans today, especially democrats, they
are too blinded by the free handouts to see the truth or care about whether
the president is a criminal or not. Thier creedo has become: to hell with
the law and honesty as long as the handouts continue. Those who defend the
president in this matter are the lowest form of slime because they are
instrumental in destroying the character of this country. They have also
given the rest of the country an excuse to lie in a court of law and the
expectation of getting away with it.
Anyone who thinks this is about sex is dishonest with themselves as well as
with those they try to convince. Clinton commited a felony and the democrats
and his other supporters have become accessories to his crimes.

When you get error msgs you should share them in your question. It will
help alot.
I downloaded and installed KDE on my RH 5.0, when I was running RH 5.0
last summer.
Then, it was QT 1.33.
How do you know it didn't install?
As root run "updatedb". Then, you can use "locate <somefile>" and it
will show you where it is at. If it is installed it will show you
where.
The rpm problem was one reason I switched to SuSE and it's YaST feature.
Doing rmp -i <pkg>.rm does the install, but it doesn't always update the
rpm pkg or the rpm database with that fact (at least on RH 5.0 and RH
5.2). Then, when you try to remove it with rmp -e <pkg>.rpm you are
told that the package is not installed. So, you repeat the rpm -i stuff
and you get the messsage that the package is already installed.
Catch-22.
I end up deleting the installed stuff manually, "rpm rebuild" to clean
up the data base, and then I began using tar, which works beautifully.

Where can I find information on how to use these features (well, minus
the psychoanalysis)?

Ah... KDE... I love that fat pig!!! Porkchops have always been one of
my favorites.
Why not? I've got plenty of RAM and plenty of diskspace and a P166 -
well, two out of three ain't bad. All three are getting bigger and
cheaper.
<memeory lane on>
In 1978, I put TWO 140Kb DISKII floppies on my AppleII+ and wondered
what I would do with all that extra space.
In 1980 I mounted a Corvus 5MB HD (took 15 minutes to warm up and become
stable) and had exactly the same thoughts.
</memory lane off>
A couple of weeks ago I installed a 6.4GB HD and hope it will last a
couple of more years... ;-)
Now, SBS announced a supercomputer that does 12.8 TOps, 4-5 times faster
than BIG BLUE.
It only consumes 1.6Kw, compared to 3.6Mw for BIG BULE.
It takes only 4 cubic feet of space (two PC's) compared to BIG BLUES
office building.
It's license costs only 26 Million $ compared to 92 Million for BIG
BLUE.
In a few years it will cost 2,000 dollars and be on your desktop.
Should IBM be worried? YES!
Can we wait to put Linux on it? NO!

Subject: CD-RW problems
Date: 15 Feb 1999 17:02:08 GMT
I've got a really peculiar problem with my Yamaha 4416S.
Have a CD-RW which was successfully burned on another PC
with the same Yamaha 4416S which I moved to my main PC
along with the Asus SC-875 SCSI controller.
This CD-RW mounts successfully on both the multiread Toshiba
and the 4416S.
I wanted to record something else on the same CD-RW so I
did the following:
1. Erased the CD-RW using the cdrecord-1.6.1 command
'cdrecord blank=all speed=4 dev=6,0'
This completed without errors.
2. Using the latest xcdroast performed a 'quick copy',
i.e. image-less copy from the Toshiba to the 4416S.
This completed without errors.
So everything is cool, right?
Wrong!!
A verify of the burned image fails immediately!
So, I'm thinking ok, perhaps I should've burned from an
image rather than trying the 'quick copy' (although I
can't think of any reason why the 'quick copy' shouldn't
have worked). No biggie, it's a CD-RW and I'll just repeat
steps 1 & 2, but with an image burn rather than the 'quick copy'.
Guess what? I can no longer access the CD-RW!!
Attempting to execute step 1 results in SCSI errors and mount
fails with 'unrecognizable file system' if attempting to mount
on the Toshiba.
What the heck is going on? Is this CD-RW permanently damaged?
How do I blank this CD-RW so I can re-record on it?

Check /var/log, and /etc/syslog.conf for syslogd's configuration.

Subject: Newbie - tar.gz - where?? install
Date: Mon, 15 Feb 1999 11:20:54 -0500
When a tar.gz file is on linux and ready to be 'untarred' and installed
- what is the proper place to copy or download it to? Ive been puting
them in /usr/tmp.
Is it ok to untar it from there and install it or should it placed into
a different directory.
Plus if you could provide a simple walkthru of the procedure of
untarring and installing. Thanks.
