Subject: how to undo a ramdisk ( /dev/ram* ) ?
Date: Wed, 23 May 2001 08:37:21 GMT

Hello, Linux gurus -

i successfully created /dev/ram1 with mke2fs - but what do I do now
that I want to return to the previous state of not having a /dev/ram1?
I know that it will go away with a reboot, but currently, due to
special circumstances, I need to undo my ramdisk without rebooting.
How do I "destroy" /dev/ram1 ?

Also, on a tangential issue - I deleted all the files and directories
under my ramdisk mount point (while it's mounted); yet, df is still
showing that 30% of the ramdisk is in use... This is also "confirmed"
by the system perceiving the space to have been partially filled in
that manner... "ls -a" does not show anything either.

Thanks in advance

You too...

sendmail is a MTA, POP3/IMAP are different protocols,
you need additional sw for this.

In addition, try this URL for some general info about, how mail works:

What? You tapped your ammeter to the power supply?

I suppose by "tapping" you mean you put placed the 2 probes in contact
with two points in the circuit, without modifying (cutting) the
connections in the circuit. Right? That means you made a parallel
connection? AFAIK, ammeter readings are only meaningful when you
connect it IN SERIES to the part being examined. If you connected it
to the circuit in parallel, I don't know what the reading would
reflect. (By contrast, voltmeters should be connected in parallel,
not in series.)

if you're running X then it's possible that your kernel is still running
fine. Try the following:

ctrl-alt-f1
login as root
kill `pidof X`
(notice the single back-quotes above)
if X doesn't start back up...
startx

Just a question: umount /dev/ram1 means that the device isn't integrated
into the filesystem anymore. But does this also mean that the device itself
is drestoyed?
I think Andrew wants to know how he can free memory used by the ramdisk.
That would be interesting if you're tight with memory and have created a
32Mb ramdisk

if u can pay for a tape drive, get one. the size of the tape depends on how
much disk/host u need to backup.

for software, i recommend amanda (www.amanda.org). it is free, easy to use
and most important of all, it can backup a number of hosts through tcpip. i
use a dds-3 tape to backup 6 linux box without any problem. ....... if u r
comfortable with a text interface.

Hi Joel,

You can't set the *hardware* time on your computer - do that in the BIOS.
Linux gets the hardware time from the BIOS at boot time, offsets it
according to you time zone setting and then runs its own clock which is
async to the bios clock.
Any changes you make to the system clock will be lost at reboot.

Hi.

I'm wondering if it's safe to mirror swap partitions without any

100% fail-safe the swapping needs to be mirrored as well. If anyone
could shed som light over this i'm eternally grateful. I'm running

Yes it will solve some of my problems, but I guess the limitations of

I rest my case....

For the sake of archive integrity, I think I'd better investigate the

mkisofs.

I have installed my old ls120 drive

But the mount command reports twice after
the mount command is invoked eg;

hdd: hd1 hd2
hdd: hd1 hd2

or just

hdd:

on a disk that is not partitioned.

The fstab entry is

 /dev/hdd /mnt/ls120 auto noauto,user,rw 0 0

and only appears once.

The pressing problem is that fdisk reports unable to
open the device, and cfdisk flags a fatal error
opening the device.

I would like to remove any old partitions and format

Tried fdisk with the device mounted and unmounted- no

At a shell try: mpeg123 <ur-favorite-mp3>. Does it work? Check that u
have the latest XMMS-version. What output plugin are u using? Got any
strange effects/visualization turned on? In options check things like
"use realtime priority....." and "enable DGA....." is OFF.

I had this problem some time ago. The solution is'nt defenitive but:
In ur BIOS settings check PnP OS. Some say it should be on, some say off
- so change it and see what happens.... Kernel 2.4.4 is out. I'm using
it and have no problems. It could be a hardware problem. What

I am running a software raid on 2 x ide drives - one is bigger than the
other so I utilise the difference in space by filling that one with the
swap. Works fine. I think that as the swap only stores temporary data it
does't matter if it ever goes west.

Usually libraries are installed in /lib, with a link in /usr/lib
if necessary. The library itself is called lib*somename*.so.someversion,
while the link si called lib*somename*.so.version

So your "libcrypto.so.0" can be a link to libcrypto.so.0.9.6.

I think that you haven't correctly installed the libraries, or you
missed some passage during the installation.
Review the installation procedure.

Note: the PATH is not involved during the loading of shared libraries.
