Hi ppl,
I have my linux firewall/gateway that connects to my adsl connection no
problem.
actually everything with my linux box is fine but my problem is with my
win2k pro.
when I install win ME i can make it use my linux as the gateway and I set
the MaxMTU in the registery to 1492 no problem.
now the problem is that under windows 2000 pro I just can't remember how I
did the last time to set the maxmtu to 1492.. all I know is that it's not
like windows ME or 95/98, it's in the registery but in some other place...
help me please.

I'd assume that the "g" in groff comes from GNU.

Subject: best way to copy a large disk from Linux to win 2K?
Date: 10 Jun 2001 20:02:25 -0700
hello,
I'd like to find if anyone knows of a solution to this problem.
I have a large disk (80 GB) build on ext2 (Linux file system). I'd like
to copy the whole disk directory tree to a PC running win2K with an empty
80 GB disk on it (NTFS file system). I want exact copy of the tree on linux,
but to be on NTFS disk.
This is what I tried so far, and none with good results:
1. SAMBA. I map my Linux disk on win2k using samba. then used
xcopy with all the options to ignore errors and the likes. But
copy fails after few hours running with resources or memory insuffient
errors (I have 12b MB of RAM on the windows PC, and 512 MB RAM on the
linux PC).
I tried the win2K copy/paste on windows explores to copy directories
one by one from linux to win2k, but the copy operation on many directories
failes when it encouters an error such as trying to copy same file name
again (Linux allows same file name in a directory if case different, Win2k
does not). and the whole copy stops there.
2. I tried ftp. But ftp between linux and win2k can only ftp 2GB
file max. too much work to break the file system on linux into tar.gz files
each less than 2 GB. (any one knows if there is a way to remove this limit?)
3. I thought about creating an ntfs file system on linux and use linux to
copy the data to the new disk. then move the disk to the win2k pc.
But linux support for ntfs write is not reliable and can cause data loss.
(ntfs Read is OK, but not write yet).
so, any other things I could try? I have not tried PCNFS. would you think that
would be more reliable?
many thanks,
roger

I am using Red Hat v7.0 on my computer, which is connected to the local
network. There is a line printer for the Windows machine, which is also
connected to the same network. Using the *printtool* i tried accessing that
printer. I supplied the hostname of that windows machine, printer name, my
username and password for that windows machine after choosing the
"smb/windows 95/98/nt printer" option from the menu. After which I tried to
test the printer by giving a job. It neither printed nor gave an error. When
I gave *lpq* command, it shows:
printer:lp@windowshost
queue:1 printable job
server:pid 2341 active
unspooler:pid 2351 active
status: attempt 2, sleeping 10 before retry at 12:30:33.268
Also when I gave *ps aux* command, it is showing "lpd waiting" under the
process running by "lp".
Can any please tell me where it went wrong and why it is not printing
anything.
TIA

Here, you're asking the shell to place a list of all files in the
directory into the commandline before running the command. This is
functionally equivalent to typing
ls file1 file2 file3 .... filexxx >files.txt
where each file is explicitly named as part of the command.

> bash: /bin/ls: Argument list too long
And of course, you have so many files that bash can't fit them all into
the commandline

As someone else suggested
ls >files.txt
or if you're really unsure
ls . >files.txt

What's the -I option for? (It's not in my version of mkdosfs)
Anyway, is it really /dev/scd1 that you want?
I would expect /dev/sdb eg.

I just upgraded my kernel from 2.2.5-15 to 2.2.14 and it went OK, (after
figuring everything out, that is!).
But I have one nagging nuisance problem: One of my two network cards (eth1,
on the internet) won't come up on it's own. I have to do "insmod pci-scan.o"
followed by "insmod tulip.o", then I do an "ifup eth1" and everything works
fine. I checked the "/etc/conf.modules" and everything looks fine.
Can anyone tell me why these modules won't load automatically (ie: like they
have done for the past year on 2.2.5-15 kernel?).
Thanks in advance,

I'm looking for a program that would be able to do a virus scan for

(http://viralator.loddington.com) but it has severe problems. (To

I wonder if any of the great Squid add-ons such as Muffin would happen
to have an anti-virus plug-in. At least I haven't been able to find
one. Does anybody know a working solution?
Thanks! =)
