Did you login as root yesterday and as a regular user today? If so, maybe
/etc/resolv.conf is not readable. Plase check that

-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 73 Aug 31 12:59 /etc/resolv.conf

If not, make chmod a+r /etc/resolv.conf. It seems that you can start ppp,
but cannot access the DNS.

Of course, I am assuming that you wrote the DNS address of your ISP in
resolv.conf. If you didn't, it won't work.

ppp-howto should do the job. But this was not the case for me also, and I
scanned lots of docs. One of the books in LDP has a chapter on getting
connected, and it helped me much, though I don't remember which. It can be
the installation guide or network admin guide.

It is harder to learn, but do not give up trying. It worths.
