I use fvwm95 rather than KDE, but I think the problem is in your
/etc/XF86Config file(That's where Slackware has it--yours may be
different). In the "Screen" Section I have
# The Colour SVGA server

Section "Screen"
    Driver "svga"
    Device "PCI-53"
    Monitor "My Monitor"
    DefaultColorDepth 16
    Subsection "Display"
        Depth 8
# Virtual 1280 1024
        ViewPort 0 0
        Modes "640x480" "800x600" "1024x768" "1280x1024"
        Option "linear"
    EndSubsection
    Subsection "Display"
        Depth 16
# Virtual 1024 768
        ViewPort 0 0
        Modes "1024x768" "640x480" "800x600"
        Option "linear"
    EndSubsection
    Subsection "Display"
        Depth 32
# Virtual 640 480
        ViewPort 0 0
        Modes "640x480"
        Option "linear"
    EndSubsection
EndSection

As you can the "Virtual" lines have all been made comments. This has
fixed my system so that the whole desktop appears on the screen.

Good Luck,
