i use blackbox. i'm using kde right now, just for a change of pace, but i normally
use blackbox. it uses very low amount of resources/memory, is very quick in
operating and in initial loading, doesn't *leak* memory over a period of time, and
works fantastic. it doesn't look like much in the screenshots, but is *JUST* what
the doctor ordered for me. it seems like it was custom made for me.
i don't like a "wharf" or panel or a bunch of icons floating around on top of my
active application - blackbox doesn't have that problem.
i like lightning quick switches between different desktops, each with one or many
apps actively loaded. i *don't* like having a giant panel or docking thingey
lurking around waiting for me to quick on one of the spectacular but minimally
functional icons, just to switch desktops. blackbox is awesome! <grin>
it is very configurable to enable launching apps from a right click, which brings
up a totally configurable menu, which doesn't need a phd to alter.
the dock is very small, at the bottom, and does all sort of cool things to help
quick switching between numerous active apps and desktops.
blackbox PERFORMS! i often check the available system resources via "top" and
"free", and it always amazes me that i'm rarely ever using my swap (24mb RAM, 24mb
SWAP), even with many open apps, netscape included. it's not just that it uses nil
resources, it's also that it doesn't LEAK memory at all - it's *very* stable.
it doesn't have a lot of natural beauty, like dazzling wallpaper and scrumptuous
icons, but i found that those things were always just getting in my way (after a
period of playing around with enlightenment, afterstep, fvwm, and kde -
i basically just want total performance/obedience - my entire screen devoted to my
currently active app, with ability to immediately switch to one on another desktop,
so i can keep on trucking.
i'm just extremely pleased with the raw functionality of blackbox - i'd better sign
off now before i wet my pants in another blackbox bliss attack (b.b.a.).
enjoy-enjoy!
