Please, the setup program to use when all others fail is xf86config (I
just use it first). It normally lives in <xroot>/bin, which is in
almost all cases /usr/X11R6/bin.

You shouldn't mess with runlevels until you have X working. (startx or
xinit do not change the runlevel, and control-alt-backspace should kill
X and bring you back to the console you started X from). If you are
booting into a GUI login, perhaps you can get a lilo prompt by hitting
shift during bootup, and enter "linux single" (if lilo says "loading
linux") to get a text login to fix the runlevel in /etc/inittab.
