Gerry:I have a home system, so how do I use telnet "open..."

I have also tried telinit 5,I get to the login screen "K-Desktop" which is
black and only a few discoloured colours are noticable,I login I get to a
blue screen and then nothing happens,The cursor is an "x" and cannot be
moved,I try various function keys but to no avail.I have to 'reset'

However I type'X' I get a grey screen with the pointer as 'x' and when I
press ctrl+alt+ backspace I get back to the prompt or c+a+F6 I get to login.

>More generally, "hangs" is an interpretation, not an observation -- what
>behavior do you actually see after you run startx? How far does X get in
the loading process?

Gerry:I get to the first screen that says Gnome loading and get to 94% and
the system hangs without responding to anything but reset. With KDE I get to
a screen that is half blue half black with the cursor as 'x' and it does
not move,I have to use 'reset'.

>3. Running the SVGA server, do you encounter the same problem if you use a
less demanding wm, such as fvwm2?

Gerry:>fvwm2 I get an [error] Can't open display

>4. If you haven't done so, try (with the SVGA server chosen) running "X
>-probeonly" to see what problems it reports having.

Gerry:I have tried 'X -probeonly' and I get a screenfull of
information,what should I look for?.

I have also tried 'startx &>oops' I get to a grey screen"Enlightment Mesage

Gerry:The default is 640x480 and I run it at that resolution.

>(The cardlist at Xfree86.org says the Cirrus 5446 can vary in this.) How

Gerry:The box says 1Mb.

>8. Oh, and the basics ... what distribution & version of Linux, what kernel,

Gerry:I am using RH6 Kernel 2.2.5-15, X,Gnome and KDE came with the
dietro.I am using a PII 350 with 64MB SDRAM-100.

Before this I was using a P60 with 32MB DRAM and I had no problems using
X.I have recently switched the Motherboard(ZX),CPU PII 350 and 64MB SDRAM
while using the same Harddrive,FDD and CDRom drive and I am having all
these problems with X.Even the previous RH5.2+KDE 1.1pre... versions does
not work with my present configuration while it worked perfectly with my
previous system.
