Apologies if I'm repeating old observations. I'm just back from a week's
vacation, so was temporarily unsubscribed. As this is a question that I
consider important, though, I'm taking a chance and jumping in.

All too often, this list has turnaround times that are measured in days. I
assume that if someone asks a question, he or she wants the answeer sooner
rather than later. So I reply both to the individual (who will get the
answer quickly) and the list (which will get it eventually). I assume the
merits of a prompt reply outweigh the disadvantages of a duplicate.
