Mike: try to remove ehci_hcd using rmmod and replug drive.
It still won't register the 250GB drive.

My client paid UKP 133 + tax (=193 Euros) each for two, 27 Aug. Maxtor 200Gb are UKP 170 each It would be difficult to get the money back to re-order.
