I'll try to get hold of the changes to the EHCI driver introduced in the
-mm release. Or Eero, since you already have both the vanilla -rc4 and
-mm kernels, you could find the differences yourself. The files of
interest are driver/usb/host/ehci*.[ch] -- and if you feel like
experimenting you can simply take the -mm versions of the those files, put
them into the -rc4 source directory, and see what happens when you build
and run them!

I just did it, but still no luck. Got string description 0 read error and finally usb-storage probe failed with -1.

There must be more changes in -mm1 patchsets.

I wonder if I should look back at the Morphix (Debian with kernel 2.4) sources if I can find them? I only have the CD-only binaries, but they should be archived somewhere at the Morphix site.

It is very strange that these drives, which work pretty faultlessly in Windoze, just using the Ms-provided usb-storage drives, and with "some" kernel 2.4 setups, should fail so dramatically to work with 2.6 kernels.

Perhaps the apparent faults in the firmware were "passed over" by "less fussy" earlier drivers?
It would be too paranoid to assume that they are deliberate patent-protection measures, wouldn't it?
As I said, Freecom Inc do proudly proclaim that they don't support any Unix, but my Freecom Classic CD-RW (07ab:fccd) has worked in every kernel setup I've used.

My experience of Freecom is that they tend to push the envelope with the
USB standard, in some cases so hard that they demolish the entire post
office.

In fact the example kernel patch in my book is the workaround for a
Freecom device which has to be treated as "unusual".

I suspect that you are looking at a non-standard response to some enquiry.
I can only suggest that you do what I did - trawl the net and see if
anyone else has analysed and fixed the problem.

I will recommend my client to return his two drives if I can't get reliable operation by Tuesday and I do NOT intend to use the Morphix "install to hard drive" option, buggy in itself, to run his mission-critical server just for the back-up drives!
BTW Knoppix 3.6 fails to recognise them.
