Mr Dick Smith informs me that xh1154 has a MD5628D-L-C chip.
Combined with info from Christopher's site it looks like you need
to install the Intel-536ep-453-R80.tgz file

Dick Smith staff assured me that It would
operate under both platforms.It's working fine on M.E. but when I try to
install It on Red Hat a message says there are no modems on the system.Now
because I am a complete novice to Linux I am probably missing something
really basic.I am not up to speed with using the comand prompt and have
tried getting info off the net but a lot of it I find hard to follow.If you

If you can't get the modem installed before Thursday, you might care to bring your machine along to the CLUG workshop / clinic at the Sydenham Community Hall.

Next time you post we would be able to be more helpful if you were to post both the make and vintage of computer and the Linux version you are using. Also, please note that posting using HTML is not usually considered to be good [n]etiquette because that format triples the amount of traffic, and for those of us stuck with slower modems it's a total pita.
