What would be really useful is a copy of, or the the url of, the file you 
retrieved to load the driver.

I'd be happy to _attempt_, i.e. I can't guarantee to get your scanner to go.
I have set up sane for a fully supported one. An HP scsi.
Fortunately "It just worked", so I do know a little bit about the subject.

btw, patching and re-compiling kernels was a regular event in the early days 
of Linux, so that doesn't terrify me.

Do other things USB work ok under linux on your machine?
What Linux Distribution and it's version are you using?
