I'd like to hear more, I have a keen interest in this. > > Telstra seem to be able to provide free mirror sites for all the major > > distro stuff to all it's broadband customers in Australia. > Yes, but there are more people to amortise the cost over in .au than > .nz. Hummm... 1. I'm sure I could manage to get a team of willing ADSL users to dl the updates to keep a local mirror up to date... 2. ISP's in AU with < 1000 broadband customers were able to do this... Xtra has 60 - 70k of users. Ok I'll leave the flame there on that one :) > Add to that the added cost of installing, maintaining and > operating the additional submarine cables, and it accounts for a lot > of the difference in price. Hummm.... this one on the other hand... The SCX is runnning about about 10% capacity at present. 2 years ago they had marketing companies writting reports for them about how they could get more customers using more capacity. I talked extensively with the consultant working on the project. The biggest issue is local loop access and not international data - hence the reason I'm interested in this wireless stuff. > Yea, yea: Telecom evil and so is Telstra. They're not evil as much as needing a little wise direction and pushing from time to time IMHO :) -- Don Gould www.bvc.com.au
