Ok... getting closer I think...

http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-6295.html

So...

1. download the deb file.

2. open a terminal window

3. at the prompt type the following

dpkg -i eciadsl-usermode_0.11-1_i386.deb <enter>

Note: the <enter> means hit the enter key on your kbd. it is not part of the command

Note 2: Now I suspect that the above won't work because the user doesn't have enough rights... You might have to use sudo

If this is the case ubuntu should give you a nice little error message.

so:

sudo dpkg -i eciadsl-usermode_0.11-1_i386.deb <enter>

You will then be prompted for a password. Enter your user password and hit enter

Notes: You need to do this from the folder that you copied the deb file into or dpkg won't know where to find the file.

Further...

"What on earth does that command mean?!?!?!"

sudo dpkg -i eciadsl-usermode_0.11-1_i386.deb <enter>

sudo - this is the linux command to run the following command as the super user (root).

dpkg - this is a debian package management tool. It is used to install, remove, update individual packages on to your computer from the command line.

-i - this is a 'switch' that is telling dpkg what you want it to do with the package. No assumption is made that you want to install it. It might be that you just want to run a test to see if it will install, or you might want to be removing it (assuming that it's already on your system).

eciadsl-usermode_0.11-1_i386.deb - this is the 'package' that you're installing. The '.deb' is the giveaway to tell you what sort of file it is. The numbers refer to the version number and the type of system you're installing on. Sorry, I did forget to ask if you're using a 64bit machine. I assumed you weren't.

WARNING: You should be aware that I'm still a bit green about this stuff as well. I may have made mistakes. I have spent time spelling this out so that others can correct my errors if I've made them.

WHAT NEXT: Having done this much you should then be able to complete the configuration based on the information in the tutorial I posted earlier.

HTH.

Cheers Don
