Voip functionality is built-in with most of the expensive switches.
Panasonics one is "voip capable" rather than voip enabled, but is $10k
cheaper than the fully VOIP enabled samsung. We're still waiting for the
price on the avaya IP everything system... Their calculator hasn't got
enough digits to add up the total :(
This is a bit of a no brainer really...
Given that you're looking at a 20 year life (which phone equipment does
deliver) you don't want to be purchasing older technology, that's just
plain silly.
Those analogue phones aren't going to last for ever either. Hence
you're going to be up for replacement cost of those within the next 10
years.
If you put in an Astk solution with analogue cards today you will have
an easy upgrade path and you'll be able to get something back on the
analogue equipment as you roll it out.
However, as you're looking at a 20 year investment you really should be
looking to do it all properly.
You're also running a school, it has a vested interest in our future.
This means we should be putting in a top class solution which is future
proof, not just cutting corners.
On the other hand, if we're going to cut come corners, I know at least
one poster on this list who's going to have a second hand PABX shortly
that would fit the bill!
Suprisingly, a school has a totally different call flow to any business.
The main reasons we're changing pabx is so that we have more total
extensions, and an answer phone system that works right.
Yes, I would expect it would.
I would having a very close look at those call patterns as well and
considering what phonelines/vms service you really need. I suspect the
cost of all those phone lines over time might just cover the cost of
sorting out the PABX. I've seen this more than once.
(Did I mention I used to do this stuff for a living?)
