OK, so your problem is with your computer and your wifi router. You are paying Telstra to provide you with an Internet connection, as part of that, they supplied you with a cable modem. All their services and supplied devices work fine, so the first thing I'd like to suggest is you stop CCing their customer help, unless you really insist on looking like an idiot to them. Just saying, for your benefit. The detailed logs of your problems are likely not of much interest for pinpointing the problem. Potential causes for the trouble are many, like dud wifi router, or your Linux box having dud wifi hardware or drivers. You could test your computer somewhere else. But the first thing I want to know is a list of signal strengths for each channel(!!!) at a time you have no problems connecting, and at a time when the connection doesn't work. Then tell us the channel you're using and the problem could be very obvious. Btw I found that channel numbers are not uniformly used, so you're safer referring to frequencies. How you get this list is your next problem. I'm not sure that Linux has a decent application for this. Your router won't tell you, you have to use your computer or another device. A really superb way to find this out is an android phone with the "wifi analyzer" app installed from the play store. Free beer. Email me offlist if you need the apk for installation.
