You are of course totally correct.
But this is a Linux group, so customer should try to improve the
questions when initial analysis has been provided to narrow down the
cause of the problem.

I have noticed evening slowdowns too, but this in no way should cause
the wifi connection to drop. The cable modem isn't even one of the wifi
end points.

I basically have the setup of

 telstra -> cable modem ->
   -> pfsense -> wifi AP[1]
      pfsense -> LAN

wifi network accesses to LAN are strictly firewalled. The whole AP and
the wifi network have the same security status as the public Internet,
i.e. the lowest available.

Barry has the same setup sans pfsense. I do ot see how the cable modem
(or telstra) can be involved in his troubles.
