The last time I tried that too many things didn't work under it; that's the 
main reason I never use the laptop.

I suppose I could try again, but it's old and heavy for it's (lack of) 
features.  I'm not going to be able to use it as a desktop replacement while I 
travel, so there's really no reason to put linux on it at all; I can just use 
it as it comes, with XP.

It does?  How do I update it (I haven't booted it in years)?

All good points.  But first how do I get it updated?  I thought MS was no 
longer updating XP.

Manufacturer (PC Club, obviously only an OEM but they wouldn't ever admit 
that) wouldn't even do that before they went broke years ago.

And no, I don't want to "bother with torrents and the like".  I don't even 
want to buy one at the Pomona Computer Fair this weekend, though I may.  I 
prefer a CD of known origin.
