All those points are legitimate views when looking at linux from a Desktop market-share standpoint. But everyone knows that the primary role that Linux plays in the computer industry is not the desktop. It is in the server. Wikipedia sites sources that report that 64% to 75% of the web servers in the world are Linux. Yet the desktop serves a major role in the overall life of Linux.
Linux Desktops play an important role in the overall Linux industry as a means for people to learn general computer language and administering servers. With M$, the user primarily needs to master the skill of clicking on install.exe, and then using the interface of the utility they just installed. In Linux, you are limited only by what you aspire to understand how the computer works in terms of bits, and anything from assembly, script and higher level programming languages. Of course you can do that in M$ too, but the M$ community is not structured to provide support for that learning like the Linux community is It is imperative that Linux continues to be the gorilla in the room in the world of servers, and that Linux Desktops continues to serve the purpose of a learning environment. Not only that, but Linux plays a major role in embedded OSs. There are several reasons why Linux is the dominant role in the server world, and the fact that someone has to learn at least something about how the computer actually works to use the desktop is part of the reason. Nevertheless, it is certainly a good thing that Linux has made major inroads into the Desktop market over the last 6 or so years. For someone to complain about how hard it is to use Linux is to complain about why Linux became a gorilla in the server world room.(not to say that that is the only reason) In time if Linux developers continue to travel the course that they are already on, the desktop will improve. All of us have seen the the major improvement of the desktop in the last 6 or so years. The improvement will continue I believe. We're just experiencing growing pains. The unity of the Linux community is definitely a factor. Nevertheless, for example, anyone can take the kernel and write something to replace X. Canonical has a unity in itself, and is a good example of what can happen if the right people with the right ideas can do. Linux is for the do it yourself, you own way user. Chances are that some day one of those do it yourselfers is going to make a desktop right. Just like the automobile market. Not everyone buys a Ford or a Toyota. Some people build their won cars from scratch. Especially racers. Not many, but there is still a market for people who do that.
