Way I remember it -- from both versions -- is that he was good, but
not exceptional (Max falling into the latter category). He had a
history as an amateur pilot, and was capable enough to move into a
command position, but he wasn't gifted by any stretch of the
imagination (unlike Amuro, Kira, Shinji, Ayato, and so on). He was
just competant, or perhaps a little better.

Key difference appears to be normal human vs. superhuman. By that regards I
think that Shiro, Bernie, and Christina also fall into this category.

Yeah, that's definitely true. And going back to Dr. Core's comments, I think this is more of what people want in mecha protagonists -- not so much people who eagerly embrace war as people who are *people*, and not superhumans. It's awfully hard to relate to someone like Kira or Camille or even Amuro, on account of the fact that they're thinking in ways that are simply alien to us. But it's different with someone like Hikaru or Christina or Shiro because their experiences and problems fall well within the human norm (extraordinary circumstances notwithstanding).
