Going to mix my comments in, though this might not look so good.

Well you tell me. From what I see, Evangelion isn't totally dead yet,
but only as (1) yet another giant robo design that get revived
periodically from the mecha graveyard and pressganged into Banpresto
duty and (2) a endless fountain of excuse for upskirt, pseudohentai,
illegal-in-several-states products.

-In the US, it's still at least a bit of a cash cow for license holder ADV.  It wasn't all that long ago that they released a Super Duper Deluxe Fantastic Edition, or something like that.  The other thing is the degree of fanatacism that some people seem to view Eva with.  It would be one thing if people treated it as just another show (albeit one that most people liked).  But there are a lot of people who seem to view it as the greatest thing ever created for television.  It's hard to say what people will think of it in another decade.

-Also, your second point reminds me of a four panel comic that had Sasami (from Tenchi Muyo!) doing an internet search for sites with her name.  Humorous comic, but...  ick.

Ahhh... I had a point back there... right. At least I respect one
thing: Anno didn't make any sequels. He (or someone) could have made
a mint, perhaps even a Gundam-rivaling franchise out of the success of
NGE. Whatever quality or flaws there were in the original NGE, it's
not distorted twisted or corrupted by the sequels.

-In some respects, sequels can be good.  There are stories that I definitely wouldn't mind following after they end.  And I think Tomino had some good points to make in Zeta with the way that the Federation, the nominal good guys in First Gundam, end up sponsering the horrible Titans in Zeta.  But as you point out, when you make the sequel you open the proverbial can of worms and there's no guarantee that even the best sequels won't lead to toward the downward spiral.

In the same way, G and W may end up in a higher place in my heart than
UC. Normally I would never even put G/W and First Gundam in the same
sentence, but each new sequel (Unicorn), game (Target in Sight) and
model line (AoZ) erode just a little bit more off First Gundam. For
Wing, the Gundams were shot into the Sun and we will never see another
Gundam again.

- Actually, it was a demolition job, iirc, at the end of Endless Waltz.  The 'into the sun' bit proved just to be a good excuse for a tension building action scene.

-There is, of course, always the Shojo Kawamouri method.  "Hikaru, Misa, and Minmei...  well, they all went off into space and...  vanished!  Yeah, that's it!  The Megaroad-2 vanished in deep space and was never heard from again!  Now quit bugging me about doing sequels with them in it!"  :P  Of course, there's still Macross Plus, 7, and 0 (and II).
