Shinji annoys the hell outta me! Sorry, I had to say it. I watched NGE, but I'm not a fan of it.

Damm, I must be the token Eva fan actually alive around here. The way I see the show, it's just a different kettle of fish from "Gundam", but definitely NOT something I'll go into around here! :-O

One thing I notice about the debate here is that everyone agrees that Gundam, in general, is NOT about war. At it's best, it's supposed to be about the effects of war on people. Lets face it, if all we were interested in the "intellectual" stimulation of war, we could do something much cheaper and just play "Risk" instead of blowing money on Gunpla and DVDs and such. Instead, we're very much involved with understanding and enjoyment of the characters that keep Gundam from being just another pretty mech show where the character's are just fluffy whipped topping. (See Destiny.....)

The main protagonist (Amuro, Camille, etc....) may not be someone we can entirely comprehend, but there's much of their lives and struggles that we can identify with and understand. Anime being like other TV/ movies, you have to make allowances for dramatic over effect and circumstances way beyond the norm. However, they are supposed to kids thrust into the middle of a war and have to make choices and hope they're the "right" ones.

Remember Show Zama and Todd Guinness from Dubnbine? Both were dropped into the same situations, but made completely opposite decisions as to how they dealt with it. Given a twist of circumstances, Amuro certainly could have been a fearsome Zeon pilot or Char could have been a genocidal maniac Fed pilot . Would they have been any less interesting if that had happened?

There are "many" perceptions of Gundam, and it seems each one pays the bills for Bandai (no matter how bad they are). So, we may see "Unicorn" and have it be on par with First or Zeta, but we'll also have to grit our teeth and realize the "D Destiny", complete with merchandizing blitz, could be just around the bend too.

In the meantime, I'm going to try to catch "Letters from Iwo Jima" and see if it impresses me more than "Flags" did.

BTW: Considering Eva is soon to have it's 15th anniversary and four new movies/OVAs in the works, I don't think it's going to die anytime soon. It's certainly not near as popular as Gundam, but I've seen some hentai of Char and Amuro that ain't any better than the Rei and Askua stuff Eva "fans" churn out. Bad taste and "strange" fandom are definitely universal in anime!
