Just noted something, and wanted to make sure that we're on the same page here...

When you discuss what the other characters have done, are you talking about running away?  Or are you talking about killing someone that the protagonist would rather have not?  I mentioned the running away to give people who've seen the episode an idea of which episode I was referring to, but it's not the reason I referenced the episode.  The reason I brought that episode up has to do with the tragic way the end of it plays out.  But I didn't want to spell it out on the odd chance that someone who still hasn't seen RahXephon might want to avoid a spoiler.

But since the series has been out for some time now...

*RahXephon SPOILERS*

In episode 18, Ayato meets his former friend and classmate Hiroko while on the run in Tokyo Jupiter.  When he leaves, he takes her with him.  In episode 19, the two are in hiding from both sides of the conflict.  A mulian dolem with control over electricity and lights comes to the city that they're staying in, and Ayato decides to fight it in order to protect Hiroko.  What neither of them realizes is that the dolem is connected to Hiroko (presumeably it's looking for her).  When Ayato destroys the dolem, Hiroko dies as well.  Ayato realizes this when he sees Hiroko's farewell message in a nearby electronic sign, and breaks down in tears.

I think it shows up a lot. It happened in Eureka 7, for instance, and
Amuro did it in Gundam. I think Kira did it as well in SEED, and
Shinji made a career of it in Evangelion.
