The First Gundam designs rocked, but they were a little unrefined. At
their core they may have been my favorite as a group, which I'm
guessing is what you're trying to say.
The Gundam set the stage for nearly every major Federation design
thereafter - every RGM unit to be exact. Likewise, the Guncannon was
also a very influential design.
And on the Zeon side, you have the Zaku, Gouf, Dom, and Gelgoog. These
four main designs encompass a broad spectrum of uses.
There's no redundancy in the Mobile Suit designs of First Gundam, and
every unit has a logical place.
That said, these mobile suits as they appeared in First Gundam were
vastly unrefined, not to mention inconsistently animated from frame to
frame and from scene to scene.
The Zaku II as a general rule kicked ass. But I liked the Type F2 from
0083 better than the Type F from First. The Gouf as a general rule was
kickass, but I liked Norris's Gouf from 08MST better than the one from
First.
For the purpose of your question, my favorite designs are those from
First. They all worked together beautifully.
Zeta, GX, and Victory also had pretty sweet sets of designs, but they
sacrificed notability for quantity. The Hizack or Zolo will never be
as iconic as the Zaku II simply because it had to stand out from a
much bigger pool of designs. It didn't have its own place like the
Zaku II did. It shared its place with other designs, which all had
overlapping uses. They were much muddier collections of designs.
Gundam X probably has the second best set of designs though, if I had
to choose, followed by Wing, but the production series of these units
very closely paralleled that of the UC.
All that said, NONE of the First Gundam designs had ANY place in CE or
any other parallel universe. A Zaku II analogue such as the Leo or
Jenice is acceptable, but at least come up with a different name and
vary the design enough. The Zaku has but one origin. CE's designs
weren't half bad other than that, though.
