But Gundam had to come up with a McGuffin for why you'd actually have a need for melee weapons, as opposed to being able to pick the enemy off long before they were visible to the naked eye.  Sure, the terrain isn't perfect and you can't always use the sniper rifle.  But there's a reason that the only melee weapon a modern soldier carries these days is a knife.

And you can argue that things might change in the future.  But basic physics tells us that manipulators aren't nearly as useful in combat as an arm that ends in a piece of solid "material".  Melee combat may exist in the future.  But an arm built like a pile-driver will probably be structurally sound and therefore more useful than one that ends in a manipulator.

Ya, Gundam had better examples of using hands for weapons (all manner of
guns, bazookas, swords, shields). I would say it has some advantage in
terms of being able to switch weapons and re-arm itself (vs. needing a
crew of guys to load more missiles onto hardpoints, for example, a mech
with hands could just as easily pick up the missiles and attach them to
their mounting points).
