If I'm going to continue on this thread I must apologize....

I'm not a 'big boy'. I can't use big words like 'polymorphism, inheritance,
or encapsulation'. So, I'll do my best to make an intelligible argument
worthy of a seasoned 'OO' programmer.

If CF was ever truly meant to be another VisualAge, SmallTalk, Java, or
.NET....then it wouldn't have been created by a couple of Perl Programmers
that were just trying to save time developing dynamic websites.
(I remember owning the ObjectSpace T-shirt......"where SmallTalk is more
than just a social skill" back in the mid-90's. It's funny...the more
things change, the more they stay the same. Back then, Java architects were
the elitists)

In any event, there are certain tools you use for certain jobs...and CF has
been the best for years for the space it was intended. The people that
dispute this are the ones who are intellectually dishonest, ignorant, or,
for some inexplicable reason, LIKE favoring monopolies.

Regarding .NET capabilities....I'm well aware of what it can do. The
problem is, how much of that functionality does one need when solving the
incredibly complex puzzle that is an http request for some content from a
database? I invite you to wiki Occam's Razor for more. Granted, the
presentation layer and data interchanges have got a bit more convoluted over
the years, but, this pretty much sums up the plight of the internet
realm...tcp/ip is not complicated.

These platforms are not so far apart. They both use HEFTY runtimes, they
both have decent IDE's, their presentation layers are getting slicker and
slicker, and they both have healthy support from devoted followers. The
difference? Oh yeah...one ONLY works on Microsoft Operating Systems
(server, that is...although, one could argue many of the client components
only work in IE as well). This is what I'm fundamentally opposed to...well,
that and somebody comin' in bashing CF on a CF mailing list.

Truth is, I've seen more traction were I work in the .NET realm....and have
had to deliver said solutions. And while this may please the masses of
Vista devotees out there, the truth is, it's an unfortunate shift in what
used to be a very diversified and competitive space which will lead to
greater dependence on a single entity that can diminish creativity, increase
risk, and eventually cause a destructive and costly revolt (American Tobacco
Company, 1890, ATT, 1982; Russia, 1917).

Over-reacting?

Hang on, let me ping a few friends....

"Novell!?" "We're collaborating with Bill now...leave us alone!"
"Borland!?" "Where'd all our employees go?" (1997)
"Netscape!?" "Leave me alone and let me build my portal! Oh! And we still
have a browser!"
"Corel?!" "Hey! I'm really glad Bill sent us that $135 million dollar
check to stay away from Linux! We were about to go under!" (2001)

PHP Anyone?

Rick & Johnny,

My intent was not to inflame or be flamed. It was simply to offer my
personal opinion.

Johnny-

I started one of the first Allaire Alliance Partnerships in Texas (Josh
Dowdell was the first I think). That should speak for itself. I was in
denial for years about .NET's capabilities over CF as I was mostly
uneducated about how advanced the language actually was. I associated .NET
with Front Page, Visual Interdev or other M$ products.
I had clients that wanted .NET that I tried to evangelize to CF, and wound
up losing them entirely.

I understand how some feel about this topic and want to just say that I hope
your employer never puts you in a position in which you have to migrate away
from CFusion and that you can exist in a perfect little ColdFusion
development bubble in which you never have to dirty your hands with an other
language that may violate your purist ideals, for all eternity, Amen.

Good luck!

Phillip
