It is possible to obtain a CMD process running as "NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM" using the PSEXEC tool, and that will generally give you privileges to monkey with stuff like that. But, like you say, there's almost certainly some root cause that's causing problems here, and things won't be right until and unless that gets fixed. And in my experience, once MSI gets screwed up, there's no unscrewing it. -- Ben
