Philip,

quite intriguing!

I am looking at the foodsaver because I plan to store meat and other food stuff in the freezer for long term use, and also vacuum bag important spares for use later (hopefully never).

So, might you have an idea how one might use the Actron to say. vacuum seal food in standard zip lock bags?

If not Philip, anyone?

Wow! all that info-
Here is something I just tried out.

I have a Actron hand powered vacuum pump i bought for another purpose (CP7830). It comes with a gage. I hooked it up to the Foodsaver and found the Foodsaver pump pulls a vacuum down to 25 in Hg. I connected the hand pump to the mason jar cover seal gizmo that food saver supplies and found, with a little pumping that I could get a 26 in Hg vacuum in the jar. No electric power needed, takes up less room, costs less and gives my hand a work out (increased strength for handling those lines ;- )
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0009XQUK2 for the pump:

The sealable bags are great, but at $0.40 to $0.50 a pop, expensive. Resealing canning jars on the other hand, is very economical as reusing the lids really brings down the cost per food unit stored.

I also tried out using a wide mouth mason jar to marinate the tofu we had yesterday. First time that the marinate penetrated the entire cube and only a couple of hours. Don't think I will spend the 20+ bucks for their marinate container, although i can see that a 2 1/2 qt container would hold more, for the two of us the multi purpose mason jar will work just fine.

Another dual purpose item.

(The usual disclaimers)
