Not completely on topic but here's what I'm running and a question to boot.

My 10SI alternator (internal regulator) has 5 wires connected to it. On
the back is connected a #8 wire which is the output of the alternator
and is connected to the starter solenoid. A 2/0 wire runs from there to
the starting battery. Also a #8 ground wire is attached to the ground
bolt and runs to engine ground at the same point as the 2/0 wire from
the battery. A 3 wire connector on the side of the alternator has the
field wire, the sense wire and the tach sense wire. The sense wire runs
to the starter solenoid. I know it should go to the battery but with a
2/0 wire to the battery I'm guessing the drop is negligible if I keep
the terminals clean. The field wire is connected to the hot side of the
battery through the starter switch. There is no battery switch in this
circuit.

From my distant and hazy past I know that there is a special wire going
to the sense side of the alternator. It is a solid wire and "feels"
different. I can't recall if I ever knew why it was special but my Dad
was an automotive electrical expert and I'm sure he told me about not
replacing that wire with just any old wire, but not why.

So my question is does anyone know what is special about that wire? Is
it fusible? Is it resistance wire? Is it my imagination?

Thanks,
Jim.
