REPLY With a Balmar regulator you don't need to do that. The regulator ramps up to maximum field current over almost a minute. This prevents sudden shock loads to the belts. This was specifically incorporated into the software because the original designer of the regulator product was a sailor. If the engine is very small and yo uneed every horse, a simple ON/OF switch in the IGN ignition wire will disable the alternator until you do not need full poweer form the propulsion engine. Some people complain abou the price of th eBalmar regulator but I think this is due to th efact most peopel fail to realize just how many features this regulator has. I keep learning new things every install I do. The amp manager feature which allows you to dial in the exact maximum current the unti wil pull out - and therfoer also the maximum power it will take away from your propulsion engine allows to yto set the max output as a percentage of rated output. If you have the alt case temp sensor installede, it will also reduce alternator out put by 50% if the case ges to ohot. If the temperature still continues being hot it will after a time periods cut output completely. The regulator will also monitor battery temp and adjuat float voltage acordingly. While most dsailboats may not appreciate this feature, if you end up doing a canal or river run and motor all day you wil reach float stage befoer day;s end. This is where the temp compensation becomes very important. regards Arils _______________________________________________ Liveaboard mailing list [email protected] To adjust your membership settings over the web http://www.liveaboardnow.org/mailman/listinfo/liveaboard To subscribe send an email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] To unsubscribe send an email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] The archives are at http://www.liveaboardnow.org/pipermail/liveaboard/ To search the archives http://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected] The Mailman Users Guide can be found here http://www.gnu.org/software/mailman/mailman-member/index.html
