Dikes are tools with handles like a pair of pliers but instead of 
gripping jaws they have cutting jaws, primarily for cutting wire (but 
obviously useful otherwise as well). They're sometimes called side 
cutters. I've heard "dikes" is short for "diagonal cutters."
