I suspect that the "obvious" definition you're thinking of is actually a
_dyke_ (funny; I've just realized I don't know the etymology of that
one...) - which is a masculine lesbian or a barrier designed to stop
water. I've always found that pairing highly amusing, since in the
well-known story of Hans Brinker, a Dutch boy saves his country by
sticking his finger in the dyke...

Dikes, on the other hand, are diagonal cutters
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diagonal_pliers). I'm an old electronics
tech, and have been using that term for ages and ages.
