Ed: One of the best places near you to ride out a storm is Onset Harbor, at the western end of the Cape Cod Canal. It's protected 360 degrees, is relatively shallow to accommodate a big surge, and has ample anchoring room. The entrance is a little scary-looking on the chart, but is easy in practice. I have spent two hurricanes in there in years past, and highly recommend it. You can make it to Onset in one day from Gloucester depending on the tide in the Canal (I know you've done that trip before).
Given the current predictions (0600 on 31 August), Gloucester inner harbor should be fine. Depending on how things pan out, I may come down to Gloucester on Saturday to watch the schooner races (if they are held). If I come and you're still there, I'll look for you. I saw Norm's boat in its normal anchorage when I was a Gloucester a few weeks ago delivering a boat from Marion to Casco Bay, but got no rely when I hailed him. He must have been ashore.
