Hello, it’s Peter here and welcome to the first Levy Letter of 2006! I hope
your Christmas and New Year were good and of course I wish you all the very
best for this New Year. I hope it brings everything you hope it will.

Thanks for all the communications over the Christmas and New Year period –
emails, quite a few letters and also for those people who sent in Christmas
cards, thank you very much indeed. They really are much appreciated.

And here we go again. I hope you’ll look out for your Levy Letter every day
round about this time. And if you know somebody who hasn’t got a Levy Letter,
then get them to sign up. During the course of the year, there will be some
exclusive competitions, which are only in the Levy Letter.

I see, from reading the paper, that loads of us have got Christmas presents
that we will never use, some will end up in a charity shop, some will be put in
the bin, some will go in the drawer or will be recycled or given away next
Christmas as presents! So there you are! Anyway, don’t forget, you can drop me
a line anytime you like. You can get me direct on [EMAIL PROTECTED]

On the programme tonight, we’ll have the first in a series of historical tales
from around our region. There’s also something you can help me with me. We’re
looking for all your memories of Butlins at Filey. So please get in touch with
any stories or memories of past holidays! You can get me as always on [EMAIL
PROTECTED] Also tonight, Cannon and Ball will be joining me in the studio! So I
hope you can join me tonight on BBC1 at 6.30pm!

No Cash

Well, the days of the ‘no charge’ cash machines are numbered. Consumers are
being warned today that they will be replaced with fee-charging machines, which
did not even exist five years ago, but would already account for more than 40%
of the country’s network. This means that all bank customers could be forced to
pay at least £5 for withdrawing their own money. The warning has come from the
Chief Executive of Britain’s biggest building society, which has led the
campaign to keep the machines for free. He fears that unless the current trends
are reversed, no-charge ATMs, (Automatic Teller Machines), will be extinct by
2016. And the number of free cash machines fell for the first time last year,
down 108 to 32 355. So there you are. The days of getting free cash out of cash
machines are numbered. Your views on that and of course on anything else, then
let me know.

University

It might surprise you to know that quite a few students have signed up to the
Levy Letter. If you are a student, then hello to you today! Of course, pass the
word around university and get more people to sign up. And I see, from reading
the paper this morning that the number of teenagers, applying for university
this year, has fallen by up to 13%. This slump comes ahead of the introduction
of higher top-up fees and is the first sign that they are putting off potential
students. From the start of the next academic year this autumn, undergraduates
of the English Universities face paying £3000 per course in tuition fees –
that’s up from the current £1175. Students – your views on that one please. All
gratefully received!

Long Haul

For those of you, who like to fly to somewhere exotic, then there’s good news,
because they reckon there’s going to be a real fight for air fares and that
they could be going down and down. Budget flights to Australia from under £300
return could be on offer in one of the biggest shake ups in the long haul
travel industry for nearly thirty years. The move, by one airline, could also
see British passengers offered a No Frills service to the US. So, if you like
to go somewhere exotic, then it could be good news for you. Australia return
for less than £300! So say some of the papers today.

Guests

Don’t forget, if you’ve got an idea of someone you’d like to see on the sofa on
the programme one day, then just drop me a line and let me know. Also, if
you’ve got a story that you think we should know about that we might be able to
cover on Look North, or indeed any exclusive pictures of something that’s
happened that you think we should see, then just get in touch with me direct on
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Reality TV

I see that Reality TV is going from strength to strength and we will see even
more programmes in 2006, including a couple of hours of Soap stars singing, and
of course the return on Thursday (it’s already had quite a lot of publicity) of
Celebrity Big Brother. But if you think that Reality TV is waning, then think
again, because they’ve got plenty in store for us. Presumably, although I
haven’t actually read this, there will be another series in the not too distant
future of Strictly Come Dancing, which has been one of the biggest hits of the
last two years. I enjoyed watching the other night on the television, the film
Chicago – of course a classic film, and last night, they showed the film
Porridge as well – a great film with the late Ronnie Barker and of course
Richard Beckinsale as well. What a talented pair they were!

Well, that’s it from me for today. I hope your day goes well, and that you’ll
join me on Look North tonight, all back to normal on BBC1 at 6.30pm.

Take care

Peter
