Hello, it’s Peter here and welcome to Wednesday’s Levy Letter. I hope your day
is going well and I hope you’ll be able to join me tonight on BBC1 at 6.30pm.
Paul will have the forecast, we’ll have all the day’s news and if you like
magic, then we’ll have something of a treat for you as I shall be talking to
one of the country’s top magician – Kerry Scorah, who is from Hull. Join me
tonight at the usual time.

Thanks very much for all the emails. We’ll try and get through some in just a
bit. Most grateful for all of those. If you want to drop me a line, then you
can get me directly on [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Binge Drinkers

Scientists may have discovered why binge drinking has become so common in young
women. Researchers say that women’s brains react differently to men’s when they
drink alcohol, which could make it more difficult for them to judge how much
they consume. Women are apparently less susceptible to the sedative effect of
alcohol and are less likely to feel sleepy when they drink, which is usually an
early sign of intoxication. This may make it harder for them to determine when
it is time to stop drinking. This means that women need to take extra care when
trying to gauge how much they have had to drink, says the study. Well, there
you are. The headline on that one – Do Girls’ Brains Turn Them Into Binge
Drinkers? Your views on that or indeed on anything else, then do please get in
touch.

Competition

Now we’ve got an exclusive competition in the Levy Letter today. It’s only open
to you, it won’t be on the television. It is to win a pair of tickets to see
Grease at the Hull New Theatre. The top West End musical is coming to the stage
and if you would like to be there with some top tickets, then all you’ve got to
do is to answer this question and email me back later today to [EMAIL
PROTECTED] The question is name one of the hit songs from the musical Grease!

Pin Numbers

I got talking yesterday in the Levy Letter about the fact that shortly shops
won’t accept our credit card if we’ve forgotten our Pin number, so we can no
longer just sign for things. So if we can’t remember our Pin number, then we’re
stuffed really, that’s it.

Well a couple of emails on this one. Betty Arabin-Williams writes in to say,
“Just to remind you that you or anyone can change their Pin number at any cash
machine, which takes the card. Insert the card and press ‘Pin Services’. When
the screen comes up, just follow the instructions. Hopefully, you’ll have a
number to change it to, that you can remember!”

And one from Jan – “Hello Peter, regarding your comments on Chip and Pin. I
like it and am quite used to it, but when the new ‘rules’ come in and we are
not going to be allowed to sign, what will happen when the machine refuses to
accept the card? This has happened to me several times in some shops and the
assistant has said that ‘it does that sometimes’. What do we do then?” Well,
what happens after April on that? That’s a very good point Jan. Any more
comments on Chip and Pin, then do get in touch.

Big Brother

I mentioned that I am probably the only person in the country not watching
Celebrity Big Brother. Well, since then, I’ve had so many emails moaning about
Big Brother and most of them moaning about Michael Barrymore being on Big
Brother. Well, there are hundreds of them to be honest. So thank you for all of
those and I have to admit that on Monday night, I did actually sit down and
watched an episode of Big Brother, just so I knew what I was missing, or what I
wasn’t missing more like! To be honest, I couldn’t believe what I was seeing.
It is sort of addictive, because I did watch the whole hour. But thanks for all
your comments. There isn’t one, I have to say, that is in favour of or which
says they are enjoying Big Brother. But thank you for all of those.

Addiction

Well, if you’re female and you like shopping, well then you’re not alone of
course, it’s quite common. But this addiction is costing you £13,000. A new
study shows that women waste £13,000 throughout their lives on clothes that
they buy that they will never wear. It seems incredible doesn’t it, but they
say apparently that all women have them in their wardrobe – skirts, tops,
trousers all hanging in there with the labels still attached that have never
actually been worn. £13,000 in a lifetime will be spent on clothes that never
actually get worn. Your views on that one gratefully received as usual.

Photos

Don’t forget if you’ve got any photos for our Big Screen - weather pictures or
scenic views of the region that you think we would like to see, then do send
them in. And if you happen to capture any video footage on your camera or your
mobile phone that you think we must see, then of course get in touch with me as
soon as you can at my email address – [EMAIL PROTECTED] Thanks for that.
Looking forward to hearing from you.

Distractions

Well, if you work in an office like I do, then I wonder how many minutes it is
before you are distracted. Well, apparently a survey says that office staff
work only eleven minutes before they are interrupted by an email, phone call or
tap on the shoulder from a colleague. These distractions cost businesses a
fortune. Researchers have calculated that interruptions account for an average
of 2.1 hours in a worker’s day. It normally takes twenty-five minutes to return
to the original task, although some workers say their concentration is ruined
for the rest of the day. To be honest, from my point of view, working in the
newsroom, twenty-five minutes without being interrupted would be a record! And
I’m sure most people would agree with that and I would say that most people who
work in an office would say that was a very long time! But anyway, that’s what
it says. Every eleven minutes, an office worker is stopped by yet another
email. The scourge of our time for some of us! I have!
to think though how on earth we managed before email. I just can’t even think
of it, but it’s not even that long back. Ben Elton was on the programme last
night and he was saying that when he did his last tour eight years ago, we
didn’t even have the internet. If you think about it, that’s probably true! How
things change!

Well, that’s it from me for today. Join me tonight on BBC1 at 6.30pm and look
out for your Levy Letter tomorrow. Thanks for reading.

Bye

Peter
