Hello there, it’s Peter here and welcome to Friday’s Levy Letter. At the end of
another week, I hope your week went well and I hope you’ll enjoy the coming
weekend.

Tonight on the programme, our special guest will be the Yorkshire Shakespeare
actor, Barrie Rutter and we’ll be asking whether you think you should be fined
for leaving your wheelie bins out longer than the Council think you should! I’m
sure that will be quite a talking point! We’ll also be talking to a man who’s
got something special in his garage! Following on from the lady who’s building
a Spitfire in her garage, we’ll be talking to Grantham man, Peter Spendlove,
who’s building a sand yacht in his garage. And of course we’ll be asking you if
you’ve got anything unusual in your garage. If you do, then we’d love to hear
from you. Contact me as soon as you can at [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Digital Cameras

I just wanted to say thanks to all the emails and there have been so many,
helping me since I bought my digital camera last weekend. I have of course
found it very difficult to understand the instructions, mainly because the
instruction booklet is the size of the Bible! So many really kind people have
bothered to email in with help and advice. A lot of it has been really useful.
I didn’t want to identify anybody by name as you’ve all been really helpful.
I’ve taken them all home and have been using them. I’ve got halfway through the
Bible book that goes with the camera and when I do actually get to take my
first picture and manage successfully, then I’ll put it in the Levy Letter if
our technology allows that. But thank you to Bob Carter, Jean Stalham, Paul
Hemmingway and many others for their help with my digital camera! Thank you to
all of you who have bothered to email in.

Chip And Pin

Well, in the final instalment this week on Chip and Pin, which we’ve been
talking about all week, I’ve got one last email here from Denise Atkins. Denise
says she has a real problem remembering all her different Pin numbers and
passwords, but she has a suggestion to help remember them all! She says, “I
think I need to get my Pin numbers tattooed on my arm. My bottom would be
better as it’s a bigger area, but you can’t drop your trousers in the middle of
the supermarket, because you can’t remember your Pin. I usually write them in
an address book disguised as a telephone number and only I know which four
numbers I need in case anyone is looking. Perhaps that is a good suggestion for
people to help remember their Pin, but you do have to remember to take your
book with you everywhere!” Well, Denise, as a final point on Chip and Pin,
thank you very much indeed. Good advice! And thank you to everyone who’s
emailed me on that and on loads of other subjects as well.

Pictures

Don’t forget if you’ve got a picture or a photograph that you think would look
particularly good on our Big Screen on the programme, then send it in as soon
as you can. We’ve had some nice 10 by 8 pictures, hard copies in the post.
Obviously that’s very expensive to do, but they do look good, but if you can
send it digitally via email, then please do to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Big Brother

Yes, I admit it. I said I wouldn’t watch Big Brother and then last night for
the second time I sat through it. It is sort of addictive and I think more so
because you listen to people around you at work or when you’re out talking
about it and I want to join in and if I’m not watching it, then I feel as if
I’m missing out on something. Once again, loads of emails on this, but I still
haven’t had one email from anyone that says it’s a good programme and they
enjoy watching it. Although, I’m sure some people, like me, are watching it,
because it’s addictive, but still are enjoying watching it with absolute horror
at how mind-numbingly dull the whole thing is. Anyway, if you have more
thoughts on Big Brother, then do let me know.

Day Dreamers

Youngsters, who gaze out of the window at school instead of looking and
listening to the teacher, could turn out to be the best classroom performers.
Scientists have discovered that children, who practise what they term
‘gaze-aversion’, are often not inattentive, but are focussing their mind on the
question in hand. In tests, 72% of five year olds, who turned away, answered
questions correctly, compared with 52%, who continued to look at the teacher.
That’s interesting isn’t it? Gaze out of the window and you actually get more
accuracy when asked questions than those who continue to stare at the teacher.
The harder the question and the more likely it is that the day dreaming pupils
would get it right. Researchers at Stirling University said the techniques help
avoid possible distractions. A team of psychologists, who studied pupils’
behaviour, said teachers and parents should encourage children not to look at
them, when they’re being spoken to. Can you believe that? That is !
the pottiest thing I’ve ever heard. But what do I know. I didn’t even pass my
11plus! I went to secondary school, so I can’t even possibly argue with these
boffins at Stirling University. So if you’ve got young children, then tell them
not to look at you when you’re talking to them, but get them to gaze out of the
window, because they’re more likely to get on that way. I’ve never heard so
much rubbish in my whole life!

Brit Awards

The nominees have been announced for the annual music awards – The Brits! Best
male artist? Well, amongst the selection are James Blunt, Robbie Williams and
Will Young. Best female artist – Charlotte Church, Kate Bush and also Katie
Melua. Katie, of course, has been a guest of ours in the past. She is now going
to play just a few dates in this country and one of them will be at Sheffield
and we’ll be talking to Katie Melua on the programme next week. Nominations for
best single – well, Coldplay’s Speed of Sound, James Blunt’s You’re Beautiful,
Shayne Ward’s That’s My Goal, Sugababes’ Push The Button and Tony Christie’s Is
This The Way To Amarillo! Again, Tony Christie of course has been on the
programme several times over the last couple of years. The Brit awards are
going to be hosted by Chris Evans apparently in a few weeks’ time.

Big Year

Well, it’s a big year for the Queen as she celebrates her 80th birthday in
April! As part of our coverage of the birthday celebrations, we would love to
hear from you if you share your birthday with the Queen. Were you born on the
21st April 1926 or do you know someone who was? If so, then please get in
contact with us. We would love to have a chat with you and we would love to
film you for a piece to be shown on Look North. Please get in contact with me
as soon as you can. You can get me direct as usual on [EMAIL PROTECTED] I’m
looking forward to hearing from you.

Well, that’s it from me for today. I hope you have a lovely weekend and I hope
you can join me tonight on BBC1 at 6.30pm.

Take care, thanks for reading!

Peter
