Morning, it’s Peter here and welcome to Tuesday’s Levy Letter. I hope that
you’ll be able to join me tonight on BBC1 at 6.30pm as usual. We’ll have all
the day’s news, Paul will have the forecast and hopefully tonight, all being
well, if they’re back from the Jungle, we’ll be talking to Cannon and Ball.

So don’t forget our competition this week in the Levy Letter - a chance to meet
Paul Daniels backstage at his pantomime in Peterborough and also a chance to
see the show as well. Don’t forget, only enter if you can make it to
Peterborough to see the show, because obviously for some it’s quite a long
journey. If you’re down in Lincolnshire or around there, then it’s not too bad.
All you’ve got to do is to answer the question – what’s the first name of Paul
Daniels’ son, who’s also into magic and comedy? Think you know? Well, drop me
an email as soon as you can to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Shop Windows

I mentioned yesterday the shop Arrow Cycles in North Hykeham and there’s a note
here from Horace, who lives in Hykeham, he says, “It was great to see the
mention of the festive shop window. We live just around the corner and we think
it’s fantastic, especially since it’s all hand made and it’s not just money
paid out to buy something spectacular.” So there you are, if anyone else out
there has got an amazing shop window that you think we should know about, then
just drop me a line.

There’s a note here that comes from Maureen Johnson and she says, “Will you
please wish my son Michael Johnson a very happy birthday for Tuesday the 13th
December. He will be forty-three.” And that comes from his Mum. Maureen, thank
you very much indeed and Michael, we wish you a very happy birthday.

Slim Chance Of Happiness

Being slim has long been held as the key element in sexual attraction, success
and happiness, but a study shows that skinny people are more likely to be
unhappy and to commit suicide than those who are overweight. Over a sixteen
year period, the ups and downs of more than a million lives were examined and
scientists found that as a person’s body mass index rose, so the risk of
serious depression fell. The study will be a blow to the dieting business. It
will also give credibility to the theory that overweight people are jollier. So
there you are, there’s obviously something in that. Dieters have a slim chance
of happiness is the headline!

Status Quo

I was only saying just a few weeks back how people have been writing in asking
for me to interview Status Quo when they came to Hull. Sadly, we were unable to
get an interview with them, but I realised just how popular the band are still.
It was very sad to read about the legendary performer Rick Parfitt, who may be
forced to slow down with the news that he’s battling throat cancer. I believe
they’ve cancelled their gigs at the moment. Parfitt, who’s been rocking all
over the world along with his fellow Status Quo founder Francis Rossi since the
mid sixties, is to undergo exploratory surgery this week after doctors in
Plymouth found a growth on his larynx. So of course, on behalf of all Status
Quo fans, we’re rooting for and hope for all the very best for Rick Parfitt.

Don’t forget if there’s someone you’d like to see on the sofa for a chat one
night, then do drop me a line and let me know via email and we’ll see if we can
get them on – [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Betting Brain Power

In the face of the jackpot question on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire, most of
us would like to think that we would come up with the answer based on cool,
calm logic, but research shows that when it comes to taking a gamble, our heads
are ruled by our hearts. Scientists have found that when we are confronted by a
tricky situation that parts of our brain that control our emotions light up.
The greater the risk, and the more we stand to lose, then the greater the
activity in one particular section of the brain. It suggests that we all have a
specific nerve system for evaluating uncertainty, but its effectiveness may
explain why some people are calm under pressure, whilst others lose their head.
Where does this come from? Well, can you believe it? It comes from America.
Yes, you can’t believe it, can you? From the Californian Institute of
Technology…obviously they haven’t got anything better to do!

Calendar

Just a quick reminder that we have sold nearly 3000 calendars at the moment. So
thanks for a tremendous response on that one. It’s still not too late if you
want a calendar, either for yourself or for a last minute Christmas present
maybe! Just call in to one of our receptions in Lincoln, Hull and Grimsby and
they’ll be £5. Or if you want, you can send me a cheque for £6 made payable to
the BBC and it could be on its way to you on time of course for the New Year!

Don’t forget, all being well, we’ll have Cannon and Ball on the programme. Have
a very good afternoon and join me tonight on BBC1 at 6.30pm.

Take care

Peter
