Hello, it’s Peter here and welcome to Friday’s Levy Letter. I hope your day is
going well and I hope you’ll be able to join me tonight on BBC1 at 6.30pm as
usual.

It’s been a very lively week, this week, on the programme. We’ve had a
tremendous response to everything that we’ve done – loads of emails about the
programme and also loads of emails back about the Levy Letter, so thank you
very much indeed for all of those. Keep the response coming in and don’t forget
if you want to write in and contact me directly of course you can at [EMAIL
PROTECTED]

And don’t forget, we’ve got our unique competition. We’ll announce the answer
at the start of next week for the competition, which is unique to the Levy
Letter. There’s still time to enter if you can answer this question – which
former job did Jo Brand have? What was the job she had before she went into
comedy? If you think you know, then two tickets could be yours to see Jo
perform in York. If you think you know, then email me!

Tonight on the programme, we’ll have all the day’s news. Also, should the city
of Hull be called just Hull or Kingston-upon-Hull, which indeed is its proper
name? We’ll be looking at that one and also tackling the issues of the day and
Paul will have the forecast.

And I see from reading the paper this morning that it’s minus forty in some
parts of the world at the moment and we could be getting a shiver of weather
all the way from Russia next week. It could be getting very cold here, but as I
write this, this morning, first thing as the sun rises in Victoria Dock, it is
a beautiful morning, although I’m sure it’s very cold outside.

Tickle

Well, I suppose, if we’re absolutely honest, there isn’t any of us who don’t
like to be tickled, but you have to be tickled by someone else. Scientists have
discovered why you can tickle somebody else, but you can’t tickle yourself.
Volunteers tickled themselves and tests predicted their movements and mentally
filtered out the sensations so they didn’t enjoy and didn’t smile. People
cancel out sensory information like this, to avoid being overwhelmed by
irrelevant stimuli. So there you are, so you can tickle yourself to your
heart’s content, but it will not have the same effect if someone else tickles
you.

And talking of sensations – how many cups of coffee do you drink? Well, of
course drinking coffee has had bad publicity from time to time not least of
which from Gillian McKeith, who’s diet I’m trying to follow at the moment. But
if you are a lady, then perhaps you should may rethink drinking coffee. It’s
thought that to prevent cancer, stimulate memory and as a fragrant pick-me-up
when energy levels flag – yes, coffee is great, but now a cup of coffee could
be the key to help boost a woman’s sex drive, a new study is suggesting.
Scientists say that caffeine lifts the female libido by stimulating parts of
the brain that govern arousal. Unlike television’s Gold Blend couple in the
adverts in the 1980s and 90s, whose passion grew with each cup, real coffee
addicts may miss out on the buzz. The aphrodisiac power seems to work only on
those who do not regularly drink too much coffee. But the occasional cup of
coffee will stimulate the ladies. There you are. If you’re a coffee dr!
inker, then you’ll find that one, I’m sure, of some interest!

Pictures

Don’t forget, keep your pictures and photographs coming in for the Big Screen.
If you’ve got a particularly nice view then I’d love to see it. I know there
was a particularly nice sunset last night in Hull. Any pictures then email them
in to me and we’ll put your pictures on the screen. Also, look out for a big
competition that we’re starting, which will be of interest if you are an artist
or if you are a painter. That’ll be something that we’re starting on the
programme next week.

Cheese

The recipe for the perfect cheese and wine party has been revealed and maybe it
will surprise you. You don’t have to spend too much on wine, but you do have to
spend money on cheese. Scientists have found that cheese masks the subtle taste
of wine, so serving up a vintage bottle is simply a waste of money. The team,
from the University of California, took four types of red wine, using some
inexpensive cheap versions and some expensive versions. They presented these to
fellow students, who evaluated their flavours and aromas of each bottle. They
then repeated the task with different cheeses. They found that the cheese
suppressed just about every flavour, thus proving that expensive cheese is
worth the money, but a vintage bottle of wine will make no difference, because
we won’t be able to taste it.

Television

There it is in the corner of the lounge. But depending on how old it is, it can
be quite a monstrosity as behind the front of the television, there is the
cathode ray tube. I reckon mine is about two foot deep in the back! Well, this
time next year, we won’t be able to buy a television like that, that’s what it
seems anyway. One of the major retailers has said that the sales of flat screen
TVs, even those that you can hang on the wall of the house now with a frame
around, are so popular and have come down in price so much, that your big box
TV is the thing of the past. Certainly, one major retailer has said that they
won’t be selling it in twelve months time. Possibly, the only exception is the
bottom of the range fourteen inch portables that go in children’s bedrooms or
in the spare room. But it seems that the big box TV as we know it will no
longer be on sale. How things have changed?

The other thing that won’t be on sale by the end of the year is… I don’t know
what you call them, because I’ve never had one… the portable CD players,
because obviously they’ve been superseded by MP3 players and the Ipods. So,
portable CD players are no longer with us.

And one thing that I was thinking about that I need to do is to buy a VHS
player, because I’ve got lots of tapes and films and stuff on VHS and for not
very much longer will we be able to buy a VHS player. So, it would be a good
idea to buy one and keep it in storage as new, so that when the current one
packs up, as I’m sure it will eventually, then I’ll have another machine to be
able to play my tapes on. If you’ve collected lots of family videos on VHS,
then that might be a good idea as well. I understand as well that at the moment
it is nearly impossible to buy a VHS recorder on its own. You can buy a
combined VHS and DVD player, but on its own it’s almost impossible. So there
you are, some tips and a little job for me to buy a little VHS recorder and
player at the weekend.

Katherine Jenkins

Hopefully, any day now, I’m not quite sure which day, it could even be today,
I’ll be talking to the opera singer, Katherine Jenkins. It’s just been
announced that Katherine Jenkins will be doing a concert in the Country Park by
the side of the Humber Bridge to mark the 25th anniversary of the Bridge. It’s
like a dream come true for me, because I’m an enormous fan of Katherine, so I’m
looking forward to that and of course, this year, with this special anniversary
of the bridge, it’s going to be an exciting year anyway, but she’s going to be
doing a free concert at the Humber Bridge Country Park. I don’t know the date
of that one yet, but it’s certainly one to watch out for and hopefully we’ll be
talking to Katherine very soon.

Weekend

Well the weekend is here. Whatever you’re up to, then I hope it goes well. I
haven’t actually seen the forecast yet, but have a very good break. Look out
for your Levy Letter on Monday and if you know someone, who’s not signed up for
a Levy Letter, but you think they would like one, then do point them in the
direction of www.bbc.co.uk/lincolnshre or www.bbc.co.uk/humber, click on Levy
Letter, follow the instructions through. If they do it this weekend, then
they’ll get their first Levy Letter through on Monday. Don’t forget if you want
those tickets to go and see Jo Brand in York (only, obviously enter if you can
get to York) then tell me what her job was before she decided to become a
comedian. Get in touch with me anytime, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, at
[EMAIL PROTECTED] And join me tonight on BBC1 at 6.30pm. Have a very good
weekend.

Take care

Peter
